About our home

Our home is in the Berlin district known as Bergmannkiez in Kreuzberg. It is about 60m2, warm and simply furnished with wooden floorboards, high ceilings, garden views and central heating. It is on the first floor of an Altbauwohnung (pre-WW1 building), with basic and robust, cooking and shower facilities and adequate utensils and linen for two (and a provisional third). Highspeed WiFi, use of bicycle. Although the apartment is situated in the heart of Kreuzberg 10961 it is positioned in a Hinterhof (off-street building), which guarantees you tranquility and a good-night's sleep. The garden and terrace area is communal and also at your disposal. We ask that smoking be restricted to the kitchen area, and only with open window and closed door.

More about us

  1. Kenneth: almost 40, Maltese/Australian. Currently studying a degree (on-line) in International Peacekeeping, I am a theatre actor/maker and often away on tour with work.

Tommi: almost 40, Swiss-German. Works in dance/theatre and also as a theatre teacher at international theatre schools throughout Europe and primary school teacher in Switzerland.

We both speak English, German and French (not a lot of Italian). And have lived in various contexts and cities throughout the world. We are very much seeking to explore Italy and France in rural and urban contexts for both short and longer periods of time. But are also open to other suggestions.

As we are both often away from our home in Berlin for work, a non simultaneous arrangement is possible. We are also fairly flexible with times of visits/swaps throughout the year with the apartment being available from Dec - June 2014.

We are both responsible travellers and are highly respectful of other people's environments and requirements. We are also open to creating an opportunity to meet with you before an exchange, should that be at all possible.

Neighbourhood

Bergmannkiez is a well-loved district in Kreuzberg, Berlin. It is a safe, diverse, creative and tolerant neighbourhood with immediate access (2-5 minute walk) to theatres, cinemas, museums, libraries, as well as a generous choice of bookshops, cafés, music and clothing stores. For food lovers there is a most generous choice of good to excellent, very affordable, restaurants in immediate vicinity. Fresh food and produce is also available through local providers, markets and standard/bio supermarkets. The apartment is a 2 minute walk from the U-bahn station Gneisanaustrasse, from where you can catch a train to the centre of the city and be there within 5-10 minutes. Berlin is an excellent city for getting around on a bicycle in, and I am happy to make my very dear classic-dutch bicycle available, it is a 10 minute bike ride into town. Also in range are the parks and gardens - Viktoriapark, Tempelhof and Hasenheide.

This home has been our base for the last 7 years. We have used it as a nest that we continue to travel from and back to. It has brought us calm and rest, whilst allowing us the best of urban living in Berlin. As it is often empty it would make us happy to know that it could allow others to experience a part of Berlin we feel very privileged to live in and proud to share.
