About our home

More about us

  1. We are Sally (35) and Lukas (37), living in Hamburg, Germany just became a family of three in May this year.
Writing this description is Sally, so I'll change to first-person. I'm American, from Los Angeles, and I moved to Hamburg 12 years ago to teach English and have an exciting year abroad. I ended up falling in love with Germany, and then with Lukas!, and decided to make Hamburg my new "forever home". I'm currently on maternity leave until June 2022 (yes, one whole year - thanks, Germany!) but "normally" I'm employed as an Account Manager for a Hamburg-based software company.
Lukas is originally from Heidelberg, has been living in Hamburg for 15 years, and currently works as an Account Manager in the IT sector as well.
We got married in 2015, and now we're super excited that our daughter Lina joined us in May this year!

  2. In our free time we of course love to travel, surely like everyone on this platform. :-) Some of our favorite destinations have been Sansibar, Bali, and various regions of nearby France!
We're both pretty active - Sally maintains a mix of boxing/kickboxing and yoga, and Lukas loves playing tennis. And we both love cooking - although Lukas has taken over the majority of cooking throughout my pregnancy. I'm a lucky woman, that's for sure!
Lukas has three months of parental leave from June - August 2021 and two more months at the beginning of next year. We're joining this site in hopes of seeing some new destinations, especially during this time off, and offering our home in exchange.

  3. Something very important - we have two LOVELY cats who come with our home, so we're looking for exchanges either with other homes with pets, or at least with people who are happy and willing to take care of our kitties while we are away!

Where is it?

First some more words about our flat: Our beautiful apartment is spacious, super cozy, has lots of light, and everything you need to feel entertained and feel relaxed after days of exploring the stunning city of Hamburg! It's nestled in the corner of a one way street which doesn't get a lot of traffic, so it's super quiet. Our flat has three rooms: 1) a master bedroom, 2) a guest room / dining room, and 3) a living room. The living room and the guest / dining room are connected by a sliding door which, when kept open, offers a really spacious and open feeling to the flat.

Our home is located at the edge of the charming neighborhood of Ottensen. We're far enough from the center of Ottensen that you really feel like you're tucked away in a laid back, quiet neighborhood, but close enough that the highlights (restaurants and shops) are just a short walk away!
You'll reach the "heart" of Ottensen in 15 minutes by foot. It's one of the most popular neighborhoods in all of Hamburg. It's super green, with plenty of parks (with playgrounds) and gorgeous streets that are great for casually strolling around. There's a ton of fabulous restaurants and cafés... everything from Italian, Vietnamese, Greek, German food... you'll find it all and it's all walking distance from our flat! There are also so many cute, independent shops to explore. We've had many Airbnb guests stay at our place who simply loved our neighborhood. Many of them never even made it to the city center of Hamburg because they were so content exploring all there was to experience in Ottensen!
Perhaps the biggest highlight about where we live is how close we are to the gorgeous Elbe river. Just a 15 minute walk (in the opposite direction of Ottensen center) you'll reach the river / Elbe beach which is simply a perfect activity on a sunny day. Walk alongside the water, have a drink or a slice of cake at one of the quaint cafés, and simply take in the typical Hamburg vibe.
If you're planning to head into the city center of Hamburg (to see the Town Hall, Alster lake, Elbphilharmonie, or have a crazy night out at the famous Reeperbahn), it's all just about 20 minutes with bus / metro to get to these sites.
