About our home

This is the perfect place for families with children to spend a holiday in Berlin: a double-flat in the green district of Koepenick, close to the best children's attraction Berlin hast to offer: the FEZ. Also close to forests and lakes and many playgrounds. Here you can relax and recover after exploring this exciting city.

The five of us live in two flats on top of each other in Koepenick, a green district in the southeast of Berlin. Each flat has a bathroom, a kitchen, a living-room and two bedrooms. The upper flat has a balcony that overlooks the district. It is a very nice place to spend warm summer nights with a glas of wine. The lower flat has a conservatory which is used for meditation and breaks during the working day. The flats belong to an apartment complex at the end of a dead-end street and has two playgrounds.

We are members of a beautiful intercultural community garden, which is located just a 5 minute walk away. Feel free to spend time under the trees, harvest fruits and vegetables, jump the huge trampoline and meet people from different parts of the world.

The public transport (just 5 minutes from the house) takes you to the middle of Berlin within 25 minutes. There you may visit East Side Gallery, Brandenburg Gate, theaters, neat small shops, bars, clubs or famous museums.

More about us

  1. We are a blended family of five: Andres (46), Jana (42), 1 daughter (17), 2 sons (17, 11)

  2. Andres is an engineer, Jana a writer.

  3. We enjoy good food and cooking, going to the movies and dance once in a while. We love to explore the world and dive into the real live on our destinations. Within the last years we discovered the beautiful area of Brandenburg, around Berlin, mostly by bike. Jana wrote a book on it that inspires to explore what is nearby. Now, we want to expand our radius again since our children are not that small any more. Our children are involved in different activities just like field hockey, football, parcours or playing the piano.

Where is it?

Our district has lakes and forests inviting to swimming, sailing, stand up paddling or hiking. There are several boat rental stations and cruise companies to explore the city from the water.

A shopping mall is right across the small river that runs next to our house. It contains the usual shops (clothing, books, electronics, bags, clocks, grocery, drug store) and a food court as well as a a large store for organic food.

If you bring children they will love the "FEZ" - Europe's largest children and youth area, offering diverse playgrounds, a lake, indoor pool, astronautic center, acting stage, movie theatre, a children's museum ... and so on. It takes only a 10 minutes by tram or a nice bike ride through the forest to get there.

If you or your kids are interested in skating, BMX, Basketball or graffiti you have to visit Mellowpark (10 minutes walk, 3 minutes by bike). There you can try out or perfect all these disciplines. Or just watch and marvel. During summer holidays they offer camps for adolescents starting at age 12.

If you are into football/soccer you might visit a game of "1. FC Union Berlin". The clubs stadium "Alte Försterei" is right across the street. The club has been known for generations of singing fans - no matter if they win or loose. It became world famous in 2014 when over 750 sofas were brought into the stadium to watch the world cup. 3000 people felt like home sitting next to each other, we were 5 of them. Just google "Mein Sofa steht im Stadion" to see what it looked like :-)

Buzzy restaurants
There are some nice restaurants nearby. We recommend Deftig for best German food, there are also good Greek, Italian and Indian restaurants nearby, as well as a burger and ice cream shop. In Friedrichshagen we love to eat at Simply Asia or a small French restaurant close to the big lake Müggelsee. In the historic old town there is our favorite Spanish tapas bar, a sushi restaurant our children love, and two German food restaurants tourists love.
Cool bars
The probably most beautiful and definitely most friendly movie theater in Berlin, the *Union Filmtheater* is only two S-Bahn-stops away in Friedrichshagen. There you also find some bars. In Koepenick's historic old town is the *Freiheit 15* a place to party. And the S-Bahn (public transport) takes you to world famous nightlife in Friedrichshain, Kreuzberg and Mitte.
Cozy cafés
Highly recommended: Milchkaffee in the historic old town: best homemade cakes, fresh organic snacks, coffee and tea specialities. The best breakfast you will find in Friedrichshagen at Mauna Kea.
Retail therapy
There is a nice mall just around the corner, a nice shopping boulevard with individual small shops in Friedrichshagen - and, of course, shopping all across the city of Berlin. We will leave some insider information for you ;-)
Bit of culture
Koepenick's town hall is very famous: Since, in 1906, the German impostor Wilhelm Voigt masquerated as a Prussian military officer, rounded up a number of soldiers under his 'command', and 'confiscated' more than 4,000 marks from a municipal treasury. Although he served two years in prison, he became a folk hero as *The Captain of Köpenick* and was pardoned by Kaiser Wilhelm II.
Walks in the park
Historic old town of Koepenick (10-15 Minutes) with castle and castle garden by the water, boat rentals and cruise stops. Erpetal (hiking within forest, along a small river, meadows, 20 Minutes walk away or one stop by S-Bahn). FEZ (Europe's largest children and youth park and palace, 30 minutes walk, 15 minutes by public transport, 10 minutes by bike), Wuhlheide (forest, 3 Minutes), Müggelberge (forest, highest hill in Berlin, 30 Minutes walk away or 10 Minutes by bus), Friedrichshagen (nice small town with a boulevard, 30 Minutes)
Spot of exercise
Wuhlewanderweg (great route for hiking, skating, nordic walking or biking; it starts right across the street and follows the river 15,5 kilometers until it leaves Berlin.
Day tripping
Berlin City Center, Potsdam (UFA studios, Filmpark Babelsberg), visit Poland (walk over the bridge that divides Germany from Poland in Frankfurt/Oder), more than 3.000 lakes in Brandenburg to cool down and have a picknick under trees, or rent a raft and spend a couple of hours or days feeling like Huck Finn.
