About our home

Our house is approx. 25 years old. It is detached and in the middle of a large garden (the garden used to be a vineyard until recently). In the garden is a large trampoline and several swings. The original farmhouse is through the garden and courtyard and is still inhabited. We have 4 double bedrooms and 1 single bedroom. The dining room and living room area is one large room. The kitchen has modern appliances (e.g. gas hob, electric cooker, dishwasher, Kitchenaid etc). We also have a large veranda which can be accessed through the dining room and master bedroom. As we are a young family (our children are 7, 4, and 2) we have lots of toys to play with. We also still have all the necessary baby items, i.e. pram, pushchair, highchair, changing table, trailer for the bicycle, cot etc. We can also exchange bicycles (both for adults and children) and the family car. All rooms except 3 double bedrooms are on the same floor. Three of the double bedrooms and the laundry room are in the basement. There is an upstairs but it hasn't been finished yet!

We live in the old part of a traditional wine growing village. It is a short walk to several playgrounds. The Rhine is just 3 km away. Cycling is popular here because it is very flat and thanks to the cycle paths it is safe to do so with the children (e.g. one can cycle to the next village either through the vineyards or along by the Rhine). It is a 5 minute walk to the train station which would take one in 20 minutes to the historical cities of Mainz or Worms. Frankfurt if 45 minutes in the car but is also easily accessible by train. The French border is 100 km away. There is one large supermarket in the village and several local shops. In the summer months a different winery has a festival each weekend where one can try their local wine and the local fare. The most famous wine festival here is held on the last 2 weekends of August (our famous "Kellerwegfest"). The ancient town of Oppenheim is only a 10 minute drive away (or 1 stop on the train). It is famous for its cathedral and the underground cellars. The nearest outdoor swimming pool is in the next village or in Oppenheim there is an indoor pool or a small sandy beach by the Rhine.

We are an Anglo-German family and our 3 children (ages 7, 4, and 2) are growing up bi-lingually (so plenty of english language books in the bookcase). The winery is now in its 4th generation. Our vineyards are dotted around the area. We also grow cereal crops. We have 10 chickens that are very friendly. We love travelling in our old campervan but due to the fact that our eldest is now in school it is becoming increasingly difficult to get away as a family. 6 long weeks in summer is fine but not when it is the busiest time of year in the vineyards! Hence the idea of house swopping. Mum and the children can go and house swop and Dad can join us when he has finished in the vineyards. In the meantime don't worry he won't be under your feet - he will live elsewhere for the duration of your stay!
