About our home

The house is a former farmhouse, built in 1880. It is a half-timbered building, with oak beams visible in many rooms. Alongside the front yard (with parking for 6 cars) is a former barn, now the headquarters of a touring theatre company. Behind the house is a luxuriant garden with three ponds, one of them designed for swimming in. The house sleeps 6; but if you want to invite more guests, we have a flat that sleeps another 6 in the theatre-barn. The furnishing includes a Steinway grand piano and one or two antiques, as well as computer-controlled satellite TV with a beamer that enables you to turn the sitting-room into a home-cinema. The house has three floors. On the ground floor are kitchen/eating-room, large sitting-room, shower/toilet and scullery. On the first floor are two small bedrooms, one large double bedroom, one general-purpose room, and a bathroom with sauna. The top floor consists of Anna's large atelier, with a gallery where two more could sleep. The central heating is hidden in the walls, and we have a wood-burning fireplace in the sitting-room to give a cosy atmosphere.

More about us

  1. Peter is a theatrical director, playwright, opera-singer, and manager of a touring theatre business. Anna is an artist and former psychotherapist. You can find more about our artistic activities on my Homepage. We are both health-conscious non-smokers, aged about 60. Our elder son Julian (aged 32) lives in a flat built in the barn adjoining our house, and is responsible for the house (and our cats) when we are away. Our younger son Silvan is at university. From time to time we like to get away to a quiet place where we can both write plays or books, and also enjoy hiking, cycling and swimming. Our favourite destination is New Zealand, where we have twice spent highly enjoyable (and artistically fruitful) 6-month periods looking after people's houses. We are hoping to get to know another beautiful peaceful part of NZ from (roughly) December 2010 to April 2011, and are interested in any offers.

Neighbourhood

The house is in the centre of a rural village (about 400 inhabitants). To the north, about 3 miles away, is the little city of Soest, famous for its half-timbered houses and medieval churches, its artists and musicians, and its pubs. Particularly at Christmas Soest is full of charm, with its attractive Christmas market, and the singing of the "Soest Gloria" from one of the church-towers on Christmas Eve. To the south, about five miles away, is the beautiful Möhne Lake, and beyond that miles and miles of hills and forests - excellent for hiking. The lake is good for sailing, and there is a good golf course on its shore. The nearest big city is Dortmund, which is 30 miles away, and has excellent shopping and culture - it is part of the "Ruhrgebiet", which is the "European capital of culture 2010". Within an hour's drive are five top-quality opera-houses and lots of cultural opportunities. Local sporting possibilities include a good swimming-pool in Soest, an ice-rink, and lots of cycle-tracks in the area. In the winter there is usually skiing about 90 minutes' drive away. Soest is well-placed for Autobahns, and has a mainline station. By train you can reach Cologne in 2 hours, Hamburg or Frankfurt in 3 hours, and Berlin in 4 hours. There are two airports (Dortmund and Paderborn) half an hour's drive away, from which you can fly to London in 45 minutes or Berlin in an hour.
