About our home

Our tastefully decorated large and spacious home is located just outside of Erlangen, a university town of about 100,000, in Bavaria. As this is our main home, it has every comfort of permanent residence. We love our peaceful large garden where one can hear the birds early in the morning, sometimes see a hedgehog, watch the squirrels. The ground floor has a large modern kitchen, a living room and an adjoining dining room face South onto a large terrace. Two guest bedrooms one with twin , an adjoining bathroom and the other en-suite with a queen size bed are also on the ground floor. Upstairs there is a very large en-suite master bedroom with a king size bed. Two small rooms which we use as offices and the washing/drying machines are also on this level. On the lower level (half basement) there is bathroom and a sauna. On this level there is a small apartment with its own entry which is rented out to a very considerate and quiet young man who also cares for the exterior when we are away. There are TVs in the bedrooms and we get many channels in many languages. We have collected art work and also now have Robert's photography on the walls. A very substantial collection of books are mainly in English and German and there is a great selection of music.
Our handy-man and cleaning lady look after the garden when we are away for longer periods. Our very reliable cleaning lady can come and clean also if you need her. The house is set in a large garden by German standards (over 2000 sqm) and is at the end of a quiet cul-de-sac and our friendly neighbours have been very helpful to all of our exchange partners. Our home is not suitable for very young children as we have an open staircase. We can exchange cars.

More about us

  1. As we spend our winters in Florida we like to arrange a 2-3 week trip somewhere in the Caribbean or Central America during the months of Jan., Feb., or March. In summer we tend to stay in Europe but welcome short trips anywhere relatively close to our main home in Bavaria. Please see our other entry in Florida (#67511). We can offer time in Florida coupled with time in Germany. We are a multi cultural/international retired professional couple in our late 60s, married since 1981 and have one 33 year old son. We have had wonderful simultaneous and non-simultaneous exchanges with families from Guadeloupe, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Slovakia, Malaysia, Yucatan, Tuscany and Umbria. In some cases we have provided hospitality which we enjoy very much and in others we were hosted. We have always left our exchange partners homes in perfect condition.
Robert is German and Jarmila is Czech/British and grew up in Jamaica, so we also speak Czech. We can also get by with Spanish and French. Robert is a power engineer and Jarmila an earthquake seismologist. Robert is a hobby photographer and has built much of our furniture in Germany and now in retirement sketches and carves. Jarmila enjoys cooking, reading and playing bridge. We both play tennis and go kayaking, snorkelling and fishing. We love to explore, particularly different cultures and foods and like to be with local people. We are not really interested in an apartment by the beach in a very touristy spot although we love to kayak in quiet beach locations or on lakes.
Also we like private homes and not apartments used for rental purposes. We can Skype and get to know our exchange partners in advance.

Where is it?

Erlangen is ideally located for visiting Munich, Nuremburg, Wurzburg, Bamberg, Rothenburg and Prague. Berlin is a 4 hour drive but Erlangen is on the main railway line to Berlin. The Franconian hilly countryside is covered by myriads of hiking and biking paths connecting small picturesque villages. Quite a few foreign visitors find their way to Erlangen and one hears a number of languages when one sits in the outside squares or beer-gardens. Here you live like the locals. Get a taste of the local specialities, beers and wines. Franconian wine is rare and a special treat. Additionally each village and town holds an annual summer festival (Kirchweih) usually with typical Bavarian music. Nürnberg an old toy making town has the famous toy museum. Those interested in WW2 History will find much to visit here. There is so much to do and learn here. The WW2 trials were held in Nuernberg so the original courthouse has a section dedicated to documenting these trials.
There are castles, churches, abbeys and monastaries dating back hundreds of years. Old town and village centers with typical Franconian architecture are everywhere. Our area is not over-crowded with tourists so the restaurants have to be good to survive. The prices are moderate and the atmosphere in the old town centers wonderful. Please also see the recommendations from our exchange partners. Erlangen has its famous Bergkirchweih festival in the later part of May and Munich has the Oktoberfest in late September so these are particularly good exchange dates if you want to experience the "um-pa-pa" music. and the exhillarating atmosphere.
