About our home

Our house was built in 1913 as a residnece for upper managment coal mining workers. As such it has high cealings, a breathtaking staircase and a huge garden for german city/suburb area. We are constantly upping the house. As such we just finished the exterior as well as the attic.

Features

More about us

  1. We are a family (Janina✞, Tobias) with 3 children, Jarom (15), Elias (13) and Enja (8)

  2. Janina is recovering from her leukemia that was diagnosed beginning of 2017. Lately she continues her education to be a psychotherapist for youth and children, Tobias works as a software developer for a major electricity supplier in the trading area.

    --UPDATE--
Unfortunately and heartbreakenly, Janina succumbed to Leukemia in 2021.

  3. We love doing stuff together as a family. If it is just playing board or card games at home or going swimming, to a park or zoo.

Where is it?

Neighbourhood

Our home is located in the „ruhr area“. It‘s an area witha aount 18 Million people and cities like Collogne, Düsseldorf, Essen or Münster. What is so interesting about so many people squeezed into cities that have basically grown into one over time? It’s all about culture, eating well, heaps of different activities and people you just have to love for their oppeness and friendliness. Make our home your main station for exploring, relaxing and activity.

I will make it easy for your by making a list of things to do within a range of about a 1 hour drive or in most cases much less.

1. Ice skating during the winter in Dorsten, Oberhause, Essen, Gelsenkirchen
2. Windsurfing in Haltern or Essen
3. Sand beach lake in Haltern
4. Indoor skying all year round in Bottrop

5. Museums
Volkwang museum in Essen
Open air museums in Münster and Xanten
Gasometer in Oberhausen

6. Historic buildings
Famous old churches can be found in Collogne and Münster but other nice looking churches can also be found in most other cities in the ruhr area.

7. Old cities
Especially Münster
Herten also has a historic city center with lovely old buildings

8. Restaurants
There are all kinds of restaurants: Italian, Greek, Indian, Viatnamese, American, French, Australian etc.

9. Theme parks
Movie Park in Bottrop
Schloss Beck
Kettler Hof

10. Soccer
The Ruhr area has a whole lot of professional soccer teams with stunning stadiums. Closest is the Schalke arena. But also close is BVB (Dortmund), Leverkusen or Collogne. It‘s a great experience to go watch a game together with 60.000 to 80.000 fans.

And I will have missed a lot along the way. Updates will come.

And if you want to see other countries in europe, Netherlands for example is just a couple of hours drive away.
