“We had an absolutely fabulous time at Kate's home. Wonderful hosts who really looked after us. The house is lovely and in a nice quiet location overlooking the bay. Beautiful beaches close by and a nice little Taverna at the end of the street. Hope we will meet again.”
“Lovely, tranquil position.”
“Clean, cozy, and quiet, Kate and Roy’s Villa Lemoni in Kokkino Chorio is an excellent way to experience Cretan village life. It is a few steps from a family-run taverna and two surprisingly well-stocked markets. For example, we needed a lithium-ion disk battery for one of our travel gizmos; after checking pharmacies and electronics stores in town, we found it just up the street in one of Kokkino’s markets. The air-conditioning mini-split systems in the house and the separate upstairs studio do a good job – essential in summer. There is a wild abundance of restaurants and cafes throughout the area; our fave breakfast place was Takis in nearby Plaka. A short walk from the villa is a glass workshop featuring the designs of a resident artist. The work is exceptional, all blown from recycled bottles in huge piles in the adjoining yard. The numerous Cretan beaches range from “resorts,” with restaurants, shops, beach chairs (“sunbeds” in the local parlance), and umbrellas (“parasols”), to car-accessible locations with only parking. The villa is a short drive from a good resort (Almiryda) with one we liked a bit more (Kalives) a few minutes’ drive further. The closest beach is Koutalas, which has only a small structure for shade, but is magnificent. The city of Chania is about a half-hour drive; it has an impressive amount of shopping. If flights to Chania are available, it is the most convenient airport. Between Kokkino Chorio and Chania is Aptera, a truly exceptional archeological site featuring Minoan, Roman, and Turkish structures that have only recently been uncovered and restored. The palace at Knossos is two-hour drive, but, along with the archeological museum in Herakleo, well worth the trip. There’s a lot of interest in Elafonissi Beach since it made the “world’s top-20” TripAdvisor list in 2017, but it is a daunting overland drive. As an alternative, we had an especially good experience with Captain Manos’s water taxi from Paleochora Boat Trips. The drive to Paleochora is about two hours, but the roads are good. As a bonus, in addition to Elafonissi Beach you can visit nearby Vienna, and Kedrodassos beaches, which are otherwise accessible only by trekking. Manos’s 200 hp inboard-outboard boat is wicked fast. In terms of getting around, we had a four-wheel drive Suzuki Jimmy, which is available at reasonable cost from a couple of local companies. We found 4WD quite useful on the smaller roads, which can be steep and unpaved. Navigation can be challenging in Crete – I believe the state road databases may lack detail. The result is Google Maps seems to be incapable of distinguishing between two-lane country roads and narrow, unpaved roads. As the algorithms find the shortest route, you may find it difficult in even short trips if you end up on what appear to be paths. In general, when we ranged away from Kokkino Chorio, we would set the return route to Almyrida, as it is on the coast and served by good roads. Otherwise, you may find yourself routed through tiny villages with extremely narrow roads. For your first trip from the airport, Kate and Roy have supplied detailed instructions, but you may find it easier to set your nav to Almyrida and follow their written instructions from that point. Time in Crete is a chance to experience a rich and restorative way of life: we found the people of Cretan villages to be gracious and welcoming. The gift of this visit was our best souvenir.”
“Our stay at Villa Lemoni was very restful and relaxing. It is a comfortable house with a charming garden. Good views of Souda bay, and lovely rural walks around the village and environs. Kate left excellent instructions and information which was helpful. A small hire car was useful for exploring further, and getting to the beach. We enjoyed getting to know Crete, and would love to return one day.”
“Kate is lovely, her house and garden are really charming in a quiet village, we particularly enjoyed the Jaccuzzi and the restaurant just next door : cheap and delicious typical family food! ”
“We stayed at Villa Lemoni for 2 weeks and found Kate's instruction manual very helpful. The location was perfect for us and we enjoyed looking after the garden and Percy the cat.”
“Dave and Leanne Reed, stayed June 2016. We really enjoyed staying at Kate and Roy's villa. It was comfortable and clean. You need a car but the village is in a great location close to Almerida and the local tavernas are nice. The provided information is extremely helpful and thorough. A terrific place to base a trip to wonderful Crete. Kate and Roy stayed at ours in December 2016 and took good care of our home.”
“Villa Lemoni is located in the beautiful village of Kokkino Chorio, there's a taverna just up the road serving delicious local foods and a new kafeinon a little further along from the very conveniently located convenience store. There's a parking space right outside for your rental car (essential for this village), a fascinating glass blowing factory just up the road and another taverna right next door to the factory - 2 delicious tavernas in walking distance! The Villa itself is comfortable with all the conveniences we could do have asked for, the hot tub was so relaxing and it was a real treat to have air conditioning in the hot week that we were there. Kate left loads of information about the local area, beaches, walks and drives - we definitely enjoyed sitting at the table on the balcony with a glass of wine and the beautiful view while going through all the very useful information that they left for us. Percy was no trouble at all and was often found curled up on the chair in the study staying out of the heat. We had a lovely holiday in Villa Lemoni and highly recommend you get in touch with Kate if you're interested in this area.”
“Kate and Roy had stayed with us in Gundaroo,so it was lovely to see them again. It was ideal to have our private space in their independent apartment, but great to meet up as well. They are an excellent source of advice and information about Crete. The apartment was very comfortable, and their village had a well stocked store and a tasty taverna close by. ”
“Really enjoyed our 10 days in Kate & Roy's villa. There was a folder full of information & a bottle of wine to welcome us. Homely place, good location, fabulous views. Even Percy the cat took to us a few a day or two! I would recommend diving the Elephant Cave if you are into scuba diving. ”
“Simon and I had such a fantastic stay in Villa Lemoni and have come back to Ireland totally relaxed and rejuvenated. Kate and Roy were so lovely and gave us many tips - they even have a great book on what you need to know about the villa and the area, which literally covers absolutely everything! The views from the villa are absolutely gorgeous and Crete is just such a fabulous island. The people are so friendly, the food is delicious and everything is super cheap. Thank you so much Kate and Roy :-)”
“The Villa Limoni was an excellent property and Kate and Roy excellent hosts. Located in Kokkino Chorio, a small village, VL is about 50 yards walk to the nearest taverna and 150 yards from a well stocked mini-market. There is another, secluded, taverna about 10 minutes walk away. In addition it is about 5 minutes drive from Plaka, with c.10 tavernas and 10 minutes drive from the seaside resort of Almyrida, with numerous tavernas and a beach very safe for kids (although it can get a bit busy). There are lovely views both out to sea and inland. VL is itself well equipped and has a separate self contained studio, as well as the main house itself. It even comes with Percy, a very assertive cat (at least at meal times!). The gardens are lovely and contain a jacuzzi and there are beach toys to use as well. Kate and Roy have also produced a very helpful guide, both in respect of VL and the area, facilities and attractions. I would definitely recommend this property to other guests.”
“Great place in Crete amongst the nice seaside restaurants and villages. We had a wonderful stay. Enjoyed Chania and surrounding region very much and were very comfortable here. N&J.”
“Villa Lemoni is in the small village of Kokkino Chorio in Apokoronos - a lovely rural village. We enjoyed our stay and appreciated the offer to use Kate and Roy's car in order to make the most of the time there. It would be unviable to stay at this property without transport. The house is quite small with one bedroom and a study downstairs and a totally separate studio upstairs with another bedroom and bathroom with no internal access. There is a lot to do in the area including a traditional cooking lesson in a rustic cottage in the village of Vamos. There is a reasonable taverna a few metres up the road and a mini-market shop in the village so you do not need to drive to get supplies. In addition there is a hand blown glass works about 5-10 mins walk just outside the village which has lovely items made solely from recycled glass and also a really lovely taverna with traditional Cretan food. The taxi fare from the airport at Chania to the house is Euro50 and takes about 40 mins. The drive to Heraklion on the eastern side of Crete is 2 hours. The weather in October during our stay was very nice. This house does come with a very demanding cat who needs to be fed and this is fine if you are a cat lover.”
“Lovely home from home in a wonderful location”
