About our home

The Island of Kea is the secret garden of a number of Athenian families who spend their weekends and vacations on a real Cycladic island ( nature, sea, beaches, sailing boats, tavernas, music, history, ) which is 25 minutes by taxi and 55 wonderful minutes by ferry from the international airport of Athens. Good living among families and friends and the opportunity to visit Athens afterwards. The most beautiful months are May, June, the beginning of July and the end of August, September, and October ( 68-80 Fahrenheit, 20-26 Celsius).The weather is perfect, the sea is warm, service is quicker in the tavernas.

We believe that we have the best location on Kea. Several beautiful beaches within easy walking distance, two highly-rated open-air seafood restaurants on the water just below the property, five minutes by foot around the bay to the fishing village of Vourkari which attracts sailboats from all over the Eastern Mediterranean ( tavernas, wine bars, small boutiques, art galleries, music entertainment, and an easy road around the bay to the main port of Korissia where the ferries arrive.

The Villa of the Archaeologist is in fact two buildings with four large bedrooms, four modern bathrooms, and five terraces in the middle of a 43,000 sq. ft. terraced and walled garden of native flowers and olive, fig, lemon, pomegranate, eucalyptus, and dwarf-oak trees. Private parking and a beautiful view of a wide variety of boats and fishermen, ducks and geese swimming in the water, the oldest lighthouse in the Cyclades, the Bronze-Age walls of Ayia Irini which date back to the Third Millennium BC, and breath-taking sunsets over the Bay of Saint Nicholas. We enjoy easy access to Vourkari, but we are just the the right distance to enjoy a lot of activity without being overwhelmed by weekend noise as you relax, talk, sip wine, or dine on the main terrace. If you have fun-loving teenagers, they can walk home easily at night on a safe and lighted road.

We recommend renting a small car in Korissia ( or at the airport ) to enjoy all the natural beauties of Kea, but in fact you do not have to do so. The local taxis ( 24 hours a day) are not expensive and a bus runs to Korissia, the hill-town of Ioulis, and the large sandy beach of Otzias.

As our family wanted to be able to visit Kea at any time during the year, the house is furnished and equipped for the four seasons. Air-conditioning in the bedrooms, easy access to good swimming, and an outdoor shower under an olive tree are for summer months. Central heating, warm bathrooms , the fireplace, and a collection of games in the living room are for the cooler months. All bedrooms and public spaces are equipped with wireless internet.. There are four bedrooms, each with a modern green-tiled bathroom, ample closet space, a large bed for two ( 63 by 78 inchs ) with a good mattress, a writing table, and CocoMat and antique furniture. All bedrooms have a beautiful view of the sea or garden, and three have their own private terrace.

The heart of the villa where everybody gathers is made up of two central pergola terraces and a spacious country kitchen / living room with sliding glass doors opening onto the terraces and a wonderful view of the bay. The kitchen area has modern equipment, MIELE appliances, a magnificent ILVE gas stove, dishwasher, microwave oven, custom-made kitchen cabinets and a large wooden table ( sits 10 people ). The living-room area has comfortable sofas and armchairs, antique furniture, a stereo Hi-Fi player and a massive dry-stone fireplace.

The front veranda has two large dining tables ( up to 16 people ) and a number of comfortable armchairs in which to relax, read, talk, listen to music, sip wine, and enjoy from above a panoramic view of human and animal activity around the Bay of Saint Nicholas. The back terrace , which has two more dining tables ( up to 12 people ) focuses on the terraced gardens above, a wonderful centennial olive tree and a large traditional Greek barbecue area and outdoor bread oven. The tables may be used also for writing billet doux, letters home, or the Great Cycladic Novel.

To make everything work at its best when we are away, the villa comes with a cheerful, smiling, English-speaking Greek manager who does not live on the premises, but is available whenever you need assistance. He will meet you at the ferry when you arrive at Korissia, show you around the house and explain how everything works. He supervises the maid and gardening services, and can provide translation, useful advice, assistance in internet/mechanical/medical emergencies, reserving taxis/restaurant tables, renting cars, etc. As he has a small boat and a four-wheel-drive vehicle, you can organize with him private boat rides to distant beaches and the archaeological site of Karthaia, snorkeling and fishing outings, or drives around the island. He can also set up and cook a barbecue evening on the back terrace ( which you will never forget ) or prepare dishes during the day which you can heat up for dinner, Financial arrangements for extra services by maid or manager should be discussed directly with the manager.

Maid service normally is provided for three hours in the middle and then again at the end of the week - cleaning rooms and the house, changing linens, washing and ironing, and helping in the kitchen. If you need more hours, they are available. Sheets and towels are provided and there is a fully-equipped laundry room with a MIELE washer and dryer, ironing board, and a second refrigerator for wine and cold drinks. There is also a traditional drying rack behind the house - the sun and wind do an excellent job !
IMPORTANT Our vacation house, garden, and location on the island of Kea have been very popular with visitors, we have been happy with the service we have received from LHS, we have enjoyed three terrific swaps, and we have made a number of new friends. Sharing the LHS experience with fellow house-owners makes a lot of sense. An essential key to the success of the Kea villa has been the wonderful year-round English-speaking Greek manager ( with Jeep and Zodiac ) who meets you at the ferry and checks in every day to help out and answer questions. Our information and transportation network, which can start at the hour of arrival at the international airport of Athens, makes the arrival as easy as catching a taxi back home.

When swaps are possible, the financial arrangements are straightforward, because we simply exchange costs with other home-owners. When swaps for diverse reasons are not possible, we suddenly remember that the yearly upkeep of a large island vacation property and the services we offer is a costly affair. We are not running a commercial property for profit, but at the end of the year we have to pay the bills. For friends who already know the manager and the house our approach to date has been straightforward — we simply asked them what they could afford and it was easy for everybody.

Otherwise, we have to ask for some obvious information : date and length of stay, number of bedroom / bathroom suites required, and some information on the interests, ages, and size of the family or group of visitors. We will then suggest a (distinctly below-market) contribution to cover our obvious costs for the stay. This sum can be reviewed to find out whether it makes sense for all parties or needs to be changed. Owners understand costs. Some even cover part of their vacation budget by renting out their own houses when they are enjoying a holiday on Kea.
