My home is a condo in the UNESCO World Heritage City, Antigua Guatemala. The Valley of Panchoy was at one time, historically, the capital of all of Central America. It is a paradise of conquest era ruins covered in colourful bougambilia flowers, beneath three volcanoes (one of which is active), and in the midst of the best coffee growing area in Guatemala. The cobbled streets of this small, very walkable city are lined with colonial-era houses, excellent restaurants and bars and lovely green parks. Antigua Guatemala is very secure; in the 18 years that I have lived here, I have never felt fear. The climate is superb all year long; every day promises sun and warm temperatures.
My apartment itself is open plan, with a cathedral ceiling over the sitting room. A loft bedroom overlooks the sitting room. I have a patio bedroom as well, and 1.5 bathrooms, with the bathroom and power shower located off the main loft bedroom. The kitchen is small, but perfectly set up with a stove, dishwasher, washer, dryer, fridge, and essential to the maid, a pila. The apartment is tastefully furnished and decorated. The patio boasts flowers and a herb garden along with two hammocks. The beds are new and very comfortable. There is a walk-in closet in the loft bedroom and plenty of storage space. The apartment is peaceful, slightly away from the town center but within easy walking distance of the Parque Central. I live in a very secure, gated community.
There are many things to do in Antigua; among the things you can do is take Spanish language lessons, learn to cook Guatemalan cuisine, climb volcanoes, bike and hike, and enjoy the vibrant social life in Antigua along with the nightly live music in the friendly, local bars. You can also visit other destinations in Guatemala easily, such as the impressive ruins of Tikal in the northern rainforest called Peten, the beaches at Monterrico and El Paredon, and stunningly beautiful Lake Atitlan. You can travel cheaply in Guatemala and to other Central American destinations using the local shuttle service called Atitrans.
Guatemala is safe and never dull, and my condo is the perfect place to base yourself. Please contact me if you are interested in a house swap in June and July 2019. I can live just about anywhere in the UK while I'm there but prefer a swap in the West Country within easy reach of Bristol.
