About our home

This rural residence is located on Bifröst University campus, a rural university in the Western part of Iceland, only 1,5 hours drive from Reykjavík. The house is on one floor, built in 1986 and was renovated in 2009 with new wooden floors, new doors and a new kitchen. The interior style is mainly warm, Nordic minimalism - practical, yet comfortable. The house has four bedrooms (thereof two with a double bed) for 6 people, a good-size living room with a door opening to a porch and garden and 1,5 bathrooms. The kitchen is well-equipped with a breakfast table and the living room has a big dining table as well. There is a utility room accessible from kitchen and bedroom hallway with a washing machine. The living room has a wide-screen smart TV with access to many foreign TV-stations, a Netflix account and a PS4 game computer.

Next to the house is Hotel Bifröst, which has a restaurant and a small convenience store. You would also have access to a gym (at the campus, only 2 minutes walk from the house), a sauna and two hot tubs.

The campus is located in a very scenic environment - in the middle of Grábrókarhraun, a 3000-year-old lava field, next to Grábrók, a small volcanic crater which is now a major tourist attraction. Nearby are Hreðavatn lake, Mount Baula, Glanni waterfall and Deildartunguhver, which is the highest flow hot spring in Europe and have recently opened a big spa. Furthermore, Langjökull Glacier and Snæfellsnes National Park (with Snæfelljsökull Glacier, which served as the centre of the Earth in Jules Verne's novel Journey to the Center of the Earth (1864)) are in the vicinity, as well as Hallmundarhraun (including the longest and largest caves in Iceland) and Glymur, the highest waterfall in Iceland. It takes only 1,5 hours to drive to Reykjavík, The Golden Circle (Þingvellir, Gullfoss & Geysir) are only 2-2,5 hours away and the scenic South Coast (Vík) 3,5 hours away. Therefore, making day trips to major tourist attractions in Iceland is very doable from our location.

P.S. More photos of the house will be added later

Where is it?

Buzzy restaurants
Hotel Bifröst is on campus, very close to our home. The hotel has a good restaurant. Nearby is Hraunsnef Country Hotel, which hosts our favorite restaurant. The town of Borgarnes is 30 km to the south and has several options of good restaurants.
Cool bars
Hotel Bifröst and Hraunsnef Country Hotel have good bars
Cozy cafés
Our favorite cafés are in Borgarnes; Geirabakarí, which is a bakery and is by the bridge; The Settlement Centre and Englendingavík which are both near the harbour in Borgarnes.
Retail therapy
The town of Borgarnes has two major grocery stores. For shopping malls, it is best to go to Reykjavík, which is 1,5 hours drive from Bifröst
Bit of culture
The Settlement Centre in Borgarnes hosts a nice exhibition about the Icelandic settlers. All major museums and galleries, along with Harpa Concert Hall, are located in Reykjavík.
Walks in the park
The surroundings are quite picturesque and there are many possibilities for hiking, only minutes from our house. We will leave a map of hiking trails, which will wait for you in our house.
Spot of exercise
We have access to a gym and a spa (steam bath and two hot tubs) which is only few steps from our home.
Day tripping
Many possibilities are for day trips; such as to Reykjavík; Snæfellsnes National Park; The Golden Circle and the South Coast (see house description)
