About our home

Tucked away in the fruit-growing belt of the Kumaon Hills, in district Nanital, away from the hustle and bustle, lies a dreamy hamlet called Loshegani. It boasts of colorful terraced valley, interspersed with wild oak forests, and a panoramic view of the Himalayas (Oct to March). It is in this paradise, perched on a hilltop, at a vantage of 7000ft above sea, with a 360 degree view of the surrounding hills and valleys, stands Villa Loshegani, a home away from home, crafted to help us unwind, bond with nature.
Spread over 2 acres, Villa Loshegani is set amidst a fruit orchard. The architecture is a blend of the traditional Kumaoni style and American Post & Beam houses. Locally available materials and skills were harnessed to build. Large windows and doors flood the interiors with light and allow a great ‘inside-outside’ feel. Sit outs & sun decks adjoin every room. Spectacular views are guaranteed from almost anywhere in the Villa. The villa is rustic in appeal and comfortable - but not equipped with latest urban amenities.
The housekeeper will be at your service through your stay. He cleans the house daily, makes beds, washes dishes and shops. He can also help a bit in the kitchen. Bed linen and towels are changed once a week. We do not have central heating, but during winter months, we provide oil heaters in all rooms; electric blankets and hot water bottles. A fireplace in the main living room makes for a great way to spend an evening. Wi fi & mobile connectivity is decent, but not optimum for professional usage. Electricity supply can be erratic, but a battery backup makes sure you don’t sit in the dark. Groceries available locally are very basic - suitable for the locals; fresh vegetables and fruits are just about acceptable and meats are best avoided. The kitchen is stocked with staples - Indian and some western and we will arrange some fresh groceries that will see you through a few days. If you have specific/special grocery needs, its best to shop in Delhi and carry them with you. The only local store that that may give you some comfort is some 8 km away - 15 minutes by car; an hour by local / rural transport. Villa Loshegani is definitely not a culinary destination. But with some preparation you can feed yourself well.
New Delhi is about 350 km from here. We recommend you take a overnight train / or a day train to Kathgodam. A cab from there to my house is a 2.5 hours drive up hill. The road is mostly serpentine, and for those who have motion sickness, we recommend a tablet of Avomin (Phenothiazine) after a meal but an hour before you start climbing the hills. Tickets for train must be booked way in advance – as Indian trains can be very full. I can help arrange the cab.
Alternatively, you can hire a cab in Delhi and drive up all the way. This takes 9-10 hours, depending on your pit stops. This can be trying but you get to see rural India and experience the unique Indian highways. Lastly, you can fly from Delhi to Pantnagar, and further 3 hr. drive by cab to my home. Currently flights are available 4 days a week i.e.: Tue, Wed, Fri & Sat by Air India.
This property is suitable for people who are looking for a rural India experience in the Himalayas. While it’s a comfortable abode, its not for people seeking luxury or even European standard of living. It is not suitable for elderly guests or those with walking disabilities as one has to climb some 100 + steps to reach the villa form the parking. The villa itself is at split/multiple levels.

Where is it?

Neighbourhood

The immediate vicinity of Villa Loshegani provides excellent opportunities for walks through mountainsides, forests and valleys. But if you want to explore the area beyond walking distance, you will need a taxi. They are difficult to come by - often run down and expensive. So if you'd like to take multiple day trips, then its best to hire a cab for the duration of you stay. I can help you get one. Per day all-inclusive cost with driver will be about $ 50/-. I would recommend keeping a car - gives you a lot of mobility.
On the other hand, if you wish to relax at the villa, go for long walks; just laze, then you are good without a cab.

Buzzy restaurants
Some local hotels / guest houses serve walk-ins or try rural eateries. But its best to self-cater at home.
Cool bars
No bars or wine shops far and wide - bring your own drinks
Cozy cafés
Tea at a village house or dhaba
Retail therapy
Pashmina shawls & organic items at a local NOG outlet
Bit of culture
Visit a nearby village to see ancient mountain homes and temples
Walks in the park
Walks through the nearby forests, valleys and hillsides
Spot of exercise
Yoga at sunrise
Day tripping
Destinations for day trips would include the lake district within a 1.5 hr driving radius. Nainital is the crown jewel of that area and makes a nice day trip for a urban hit. A drive down to the tea plantations at Sheetla Khet is a wonderful experience for those who have not been to a tea estate before. Almora is just a couple of hours away and offers an opportunity to experience a small town in Kumaon. Just ahead of Almore is Jageshwar with its formidable ancient Chital Temples. Further ahead is Binsar, Kausani - both offer spectacular / close up Himalayan views.
