Our reclaimed antique teak structures are carefully designed to be in touch with nature. We were featured in the New York Times and now have a book coming out about our Designs. Walk 6 minutes or ride a rented motorbike along a tropical river path (and then up 30 steps) to one of three houses. Jazmin is set in a rice paddy, which we have kept, partially intact, as part of our commitment to this agricultural tradition. Across the rice paddy is our other joglo, Passiflora, Marguerite, our freshly remodeled house is across the walking path. We have also recently added a shared salt water pool for the use of our guests in the three houses!
Our neighborhood has no car access nor motorbike noise, but many sounds of geckos, roosters, frogs and collared kingfisher birds, while still walking distance from Ubud (20 minutes).
Passiflora is a reclaimed antique joglo brought over timber by timber from Java. Each of my joglos has its own personality. I carefully design every detail to make sure that staying in these transformed traditional structures is a one of a kind experience in luxurious but simple ecological living.
As you walk into Jazmin, you'll be taken by the spacious loft -like feeling (1000 sq. ft. /90 meters square) with the added visual pleasure of antique teak timber beams and carved wood panels brought over from Madura. The roof is made of handwoven grass known as "alang-alang" here.
I have combined traditional elements, but the sensibility is modern with an emphasis on comfort. There are no villas in Ubud quite as uniquely in touch with nature as Passiflora and Jazmin. We have designed for cross ventilation and have fans, but no AC.
Read on the daybed on the verandah, have a conversation in the living room then have a nap in the bedroom on the king-sized super comfortable bed overlooking the family temple. The kitchen is perfect for cooking: polished concrete countertops and reclaimed wood cabinet doors. At night, the bedroom locks up for privacy and safety, but the living room stays open for maximum connection with nature. You can practice yoga comfortably in so many spots and later bathe under the stars in the sunken tub.
You can pay Made, Made to pamper you with healthy breakfasts of Bali Buda bread, Bali Coffee and our homemade yogurt and jam. No breakfast would be complete without a plate of tropical fruit. I'll also leave you my list of my favorite secret spots and restaurants.
Honeymoon couples love the joglos, however I also love staying in the joglos by myself. Our houses are the only two in Penestanan which are connected to traditional Balinese family temples.
Like Jazmin, this is a truly unique experience for FIT folks who want to be in touch with the Bali of rice farmers in the most natural but still luxurious way! Enjoy!
All my secret spots.. and sources from a ten year + + love affair with Bali. And my beautiful and kind and helpful staff: Sri, Made and Made.
I love meeting our guests and am doubly happy when I see the variety of different kinds of people, who are happy and make our homes their homes. That is your gift to me. I try to come by the first morning.. but I am traveling and building for clients, so quite busy. I am always available via email and SMS as are Sri my right hand, wonderful assistant. And it is nice to know that you have privacy as well. And we have a very complete list of all things wonderful that are must dos.. and a local phone for use of our guests with our numbers in them. Very handy.
Penestanan has become hip... and now has its very own yoga studio, meditation center, approximately 10+ charming restaurants (Indonesian, Japanese, Indian, Raw/Organic, Vegetarian, Vegan) and a cafe and bakery, so you don't even have to get on your motorbike.
We can organize a scooter for you for $5 per day or
you can take an expensive taxi to Ubud $5 per ride.. or you can walk... 20 minutes.. to all things Ubud . You can also hire a car with a driver for about $50 US.
Most recently Lost Bali fatured us as the ONLY CHOICE for where to stay in Ubud! We are quite flattered. In the fall, Seen Unseen is coming out.
If you'd like a joglo of your own, let us know. :)
Our drivers Ketut, Allo or Komang will be delighted to pick you up at the airport. We recommend this option because they know where we live and are willing to carry bags. Other drivers are not. The cost is $350,000 Rp and can be paid to them directly. We provide a local phone at the villa with preprogrammed numbers and a little credit. Our homemade laminated map is a great help for navigating your local adventures.
Interaction with Guests
Sri will generally greet you unless you arrive in the evening. The next morning one of us will stop by to say hello and offer suggestions for making your stay memorable. You can always contact us via SMS or email.
Penestanan is the now the hip section of town. Interesting little restaurants have opened up: Yellow Flower (3 minute walk), Alchemy, Element, Wayan's Juice, Made's Warung. We have a wonderful yoga studio: (3 minutes walking) Intuitive Flow. Cantika Zest, an outdoor spa set in a jungle like setting, is a 15 minutes walk. Because Ubud center is crowded now, it's wonderful to escape to our village and still be a twenty five minute leisurely walk away.
You may rent a motor scooter for 5 dollars per day. Taxis to Ubud are expensive (5 dollars per ride). Walking is a wonderful healthy alternative. If you would like to hire a car with a driver for the day, the cost is about $50US.
Other Things to Note
Our saltwater pool is for the use of of our guests at the three houses. You will find that you will have it all to yourselves most of the time. Our drivers, Allo, Ketut and Komang will be happy to pick you up at the airport. The cost is Rp.350,000.
