About our home

Our home in Bali when we escape the winter of New Zealand is Dara Ayu Villas & Spa. It is a new boutique resort located near Ubud, Bali’s famous art and culture centre.

The estate consists of five individual villas including a spa and spreads in an area of one and a half hectares. It is set in its own valley and surrounded by immaculately terraced rice paddies so whichever villa you choose you have the magnificent views of the rice paddies. Bali famed mountains are often visible from the estate and with a small river running at the bottom of the estate as well as the bush clad countryside Dara Ayu resembles a beautiful lady (the meaning of Dara Ayu) in her own evergreen cloak.

Elements of mother earth are present at Dara Ayu – rock formation, water features including Bali famed subak (rice field irrigation system), wood, fire and of course the ever so refreshing mountain breezes.

Your senses are awaken by the stunning views, the sound of the night orchestra of forest insects, the smell of herb and spices from our kitchen and the many sweet smelling flowers growing at the resort.

Each villa is architecturally designed and landscaped to provide a complete harmony with the surrounding natural beauty and with romance in mind so it is especially suitable for couples wanting to celebrate those special occasions like a wedding anniversary, honeymoon or their love for each other.

More about us

  1. Dave, a true blue Kiwi has recently retired from the workforce (for the third time) and is currently enjoying retirement (until such time a job offer too good to refuse comes along). Klara, an Indonesian by birth, is a lady of leisure when she is not marketing and managing the new villas and Spa boutique resort near Ubud in Bali.

We plan to enjoy the beautiful summer on the beach in New Zealand and escape the winter to our boutique resort up on the hill of Bali. The rest of the year we want to explore the world and meet interesting people.

We have no specific destination in mind as every place in the world is unique in its own way. So we will consider your offer - anywhere and anytime.

Where is it?

Dara Ayu Villas & Spa is located in Majangan Village about 40 minutes drive from Ubud, Bali's famous centre for art and culture - by the way Ubud was featured in the movie, Eat Pray and Love. The airport near Kuta is about one and a half hour drive away.

Majangan Village has a population of around 400 people and is surrounded by other small villages of similar size. Taking a leisure walk to each of these villages not only it is quite relaxing but can also be a cultural experience. As well as enjoying rice paddies and the many temples, you see village people doing their chores for living and for their Hindu religion. Balinese are very religious people and very friendly, during your visit, not only will you see how they prepare their daily offerings but also a ceremony or more. Women, men and children dressed up in their colourful traditional costumes with women carrying beautiful flower and fruit arrangements on their head.

Must-dos in Ubud and the surrounding areas include white water rafting (with a difference), downhill cycling along the rice paddies, a temple trip, a dance performance and wandering through the many galleries and souvenir shops.
