About our home

This holiday cottage is on Achill Island, accessible to the mainland an hour from Knock airport by bridge. The house on a hill overlooking the Atlantic sleeps six in three bedrooms. There is also a bathroom, a large kitchen and large sitting room. There is limited public transport by bus - the island is best explored by car or bike. The island has lots of bike hire, fishing, watersports, kitesurfing, etc.

It is a cosy house, with gas-fired central heating, a wood stove, and double-glazed windows. There is a lot of privacy and space around the house, and interesting hill walks right from the front gate.

Achill is an island connected to County Mayo by bridge. There are stunning views over the Atlantic ocean, good friendly pubs with traditional music, seafood restaurants, lots of hillwalking, beaches, fishing, watersports, horseriding etc. The island has four mountains to climb, five blue flag beaches, a famine-era deserted village, festivals, music, good seafood. See full details on what is on in the locality on www.achilltourism.com/

The house is also about an hour from Westport, a beautiful market town with good craft shops, restaurants and pubs. Also within an hour or two are the National Country Museum outside Castlebar, Ireland's pilgrim mountain at Croagh Patrick, the ancient Céide Fields and Ireland West International Airport at Knock.

We are a family with two kids in college and a teenage girl. We are both academics, working in the areas of human rights, corporate social responsibility, corporate finance and IT. We're interested in Italy and the Mediterranean generally, New York and Seattle. It doesn't have to be a simultaneous swap
