About our home

This idyllic traditional old stone cottage sits in a pretty and secluded location off a quiet winding boreen (small lane) close to the timelessly beautiful Lough Mask. It is a dream Irish cottage. Will suit families, couples, writers, anglers or anyone wishing to simply get away from it all in beautiful countryside. An ideal base for those wishing to explore Mayo, Galway and the West of Ireland.
Michael , the caretaker is a boatman/angling guide with a lifetime's knowledge of local fishing. He has boats on Lough Mask and Lough Carra and angling/sightseeing trips can be arranged with him.

The cottage appears on the earliest Ordnance Survey map of the area and is known to date from at least the early 1800s but may well be much older. It has in recent years been carefully and sympathetically restored to a high standard with modern comforts and amenities. It retains many original character features to provide a warm, cosy and unique hideaway. The alcove by the fireplace, hidden but discovered during restorations is a once common feature of old cottages and known locally as a "Hag Bed", where the old lady of the house had a little bed with pride of place next to the fire. Where possible throughout, the architect specified authentic reclaimed materials for the renovations, so the special feel of the place has been retained.

A lovely, warm and cosy old cottage to relax and unwind in at any time of the year.

The town features a range of shops, many contemporary and traditional pubs, live music, restaurants, takeaways, internet cafe, a tourist office, DVD hire (the DVD collection at the cottage is huge) and a large Tesco Supermarket etc.

For those wishing to investigate their family trees, genealogical services are provided by the South Mayo Family Research Centre on Main Street.
