Where is it?
Our home has every privacy but evenso is in the heart of a surround of five very nice neighbouring homes, with other similar homes very adjacent. We are a professional/farming neighbourhood approx 1km from Ballymahon town. We are a supportive and friendly lot, always at hand to help or share coffee or a glass of wine, as well as good at minding our own business!
There are c. 2000 people in this good business town, which does not seem to have been ill-affected by the global downturn! It's a very lively community with many sports and social clubs, music, literary and cultural events, committes for juniors, seniors and all! There are various festivals on during the year, St. Patrick's Day, Helium, a top class music festival for charity in Summer, Goldsmith Summer School literary festival, and Drama Festival in November.
Ballymahon, a clean and tidy town, has become well known for it's church choir and Innyside Singers group, as well as it's Drama Society and Bog Lane Theatre. There are clubs/associations for Gaelic Athletics, walking, canoeing, kayaking, shooting and fishing, bridge, 'golden years', drama, writers, art, singing, dance, tidy towns, traders etc. etc. Several Golf courses from 7mins drive.
There is a lovely new library in the town centre open almost full-time. There are two churches, catholic and protestant. Writers Oliver Goldsmith and Leo Casey lived and wrote about these parts! Ballymahon is twinned with a French town Landevant and I have enjoyed three lovely trips there and returned hospitality also.
There are great pubs and restaurants in the area and many more in the close surrounds. There are also several beautiful award winning local villages close-by. One of these, Abbeyshrule has a small airport and aquaduct as well as a fine restaurant and pub! There are many regular traditional music sessions in the local pubs different nights of the week. Skellys is a great pub and restaurant and Cooneys hotel gives great personal service and food and is a lovely very well maintained and run place to hang out!
The river Inny flows through the town and the Royal canal also, together with the local forest and bogs, all provide gorgeous walks fishing and sports.
As a painter/artist I enjoy sketching and find beautiful compositions all over this lovely part of Ireland. It is a rich farming countryside with many old buildings, monuments and homes of note. (See Wikipedia). Originally from Galway, We like to tell people of the beauty of this midlands part of 'The Hidden Ireland' when they ramble on (quite rightly!) about how wonderful Galway is!
Accessible by car or daily bus, there are four big towns, Athlone, Roscommon, Mullingar and Longford, within 17km, with very good shopping, theatres, restaurants and cinemas, bus/train stations with access to Galway, Dublin etc. each approx 80min drive. It is easily possible to go to a theatre show in Dublin or Galway and return home that night!
Being in the very heart of Ireland with easy accessibility to the rest of the country, Ballymahon has every advantage!
