About our home

We have been lucky to have this 2nd home for about 7 years from new. It is so great because there is so much to see and do without getting in a car. The house is a 3 storey terrace in a lovely development right opposite the small fishing harbour. There is a large, open downstairs living area with dining and connecting to the kitchen; the mountain is on view from the kitchen sink. There is a wood burning fire.
The 2 upstairs floors have 2 double rooms and a bathroom each; 4 bedrooms in all. There is a downstairs cloak and toilet also. The shed has some bicycles for the mountain, golf clubs and even a windsurfer if you are game. Back garden great for sitting out as it's a suntrap.

More about us

  1. We are John and Binne, a gay couple with 2 beagle dogs who love to travel but also like home. We are likely to have a young child on holiday with us next time. We live in Belfast 1 hour's drive north of Carlingford but often come down at the weekend. John works in Northern Ireland's health service and Binne - who comes from the Netherlands - is a self-employed. We love the outdoors and would like to visit southern parts of Europe in the summer.
We are new to the Home for exchange concept but hope to enjoy the experience.

Where is it?

Carlingford is a small, beautiful village which has several castles, pubs, several pretty decent restaurants and 2 hotels. It is quaint and realxed but lively too. See great website.
There is a local horse-riding school only a few minutes walk at the Ghan house. Hill walking is great and the top of the mountain 587 metres. There are signed easy walks, local mountain bike tracks, swimming or canoeing in the harbour. The local adventure centre offers mote outdoor activities. The local stoney beach is fine to swim if you like cold water, there's a wetsuit in the house if you don't! There's a children's playground and local tennis courts too. You can become a guest member of the local hotel's pool with sauna and jacuzzi. 3 mins walk from the house.
This all without using a car or even walking too far! If you have a car then there are several golf courses nearby, day-trips to Newry for shop or cinema; the Mournes for bigger mountains or lovely Templetown (5 miles) for a sandy beach where there is a lifeguard in the summer.
You can also reach Dublin or Belfast for a day-trip (90 minutes drive) or historic Newgrange in county Louth. There's a tourist office right in carlingford.
