“We had a wonderful swap to this beautiful home which is situated on a quiet country road surrounded by green fields and hedgerows filled with wild flowers. The house itself is modern and large with very comfortable bedrooms and lots of bathrooms. There is a gorgeous deck off the sunny kitchen/dining room where you can sit and take the sun while watching the local birds feasting themselves from the feeders hanging in the trees. We have never stayed in Leitrim before so had no idea what a lovely county it is with many lakes , waterways and beautiful countryside. There is so much to see and do you will be spoiled for choice. The local village of Dromod has several pubs/restaurants and also a supermarket and there is a pier where you can sit and watch the cabin cruisers coming and going on the Shannon waterway. Carrick on Shannon is only a 15 min drive away where there are plenty of shops and restaurants .We took the hour long 'Moon River' cruise from here on a beautiful sunny day and enjoyed a drink on board with live Irish music. We visited the National Famine museum and walled gardens at Strokestown, went underground on the Arigna mining experience and toured King House in Boyle which is really fascinating with lots of interactive exhibits suitable for children. They also have a display of all the exquisite gifts given to president Mary McAleese during her term of office from heads of state around the world. Lough Key Forest park is a great day out with something for all the family. Further north in the county is the beautiful Glencar waterfall and not far from there is Parkes Castle on the shores of Lough Gill. The garden area at Parkes Castle has picnic tables so you can enjoy your lunch looking over the lake. There is a lovely floating walkway at acres lake Drumshanbo and soon you will be able to visit the Gunpowder Gin factory which is located there. All of these attractions apart from Parkes castle have cafes on site with homemade food and cakes when you need a break. Only a 10 minute drive from the house is Lough Rynn castle where the beautifully maintained walled gardens stretch down to the lake. You can swim in the lake just 7 mins from the house at the Lough Rynn amenity area where there are fantastic facilities for rowers and canoeists with eight 2,000 meter lanes marked out. If you like walking there are two walking paths in the area, the Leitrim way which is 48km long and the Miners way a 118km trail, both routes touch on the many lakes in the area. We enjoyed many walks right from the door of the house along the quiet country roads. This part of Ireland is not as touristy as some of the other more publicized places but is all the better for this and we would highly recommend swapping with Liz and Mike and sharing their piece of paradise. Communication with Liz was very easy and we look forward to them visiting Tavira next year.”
