Neighbourhood

Our house is situated in the quiet residential neighbourhood of Cullenagh, which is a short 10 minute walk into the cafes, restaurants, bars and shops of the twin towns of Ballina-Killaloe.

Situated on the banks of the River Shannon, the twin towns of Killaloe and Ballina are amongst Ireland's most picturesque attractions and are linked by a 13 arch bridge, which links not only the two towns, but also the counties of Clare and Tipperary.

Killaloe/Ballina has a wide range of amenities with a number of boutiques, gift stores, art galleries, health and wellness centres, historical sites, and a choice of superb bars, cafes and restaurants.

Shannon Airport is only a 30 minute drive whilst Dublin and Cork airports are less than 2 hours. Galway (European Capital of Culture for 2020) is an hour away by car also.

Limerick City, standing on the River Shannon, with its medieval-era St. Mary’s Cathedral, St. John’s square and one of Ireland's oldest food markets - the Milk Market - is just a short 20 minute drive away. The city’s university was also listed as the Sunday Times University of the Year last year and hosts a large number of summer camps in July and August each year.

We also live close to some of the finest golf courses in the world. Adare Manor and golf club, home to the next Ryder cup, is just a 30 minute drive away.

Want to ditch the car? Then hire a boat and cruise along the many lakeside towns and villages nearby. Our personal favourites are:

- Garrykennedy: home to Larkins - the award winning lakeside pub and restaurant.
- Dromineer: one of the oldest villages on the lake, Dromineer offers a range of visitor facilities and services including accommodation, a pub, sailing club and places to eat.
- Mountshannon :an ideal point to set out for Holy Island and boat trips can be arranged.

We are keen triathletes and can also offer advice to anyone interested in running, swimming and cycling options- of which there are numerous - in the area. The nearby Ballycuggaran has amazing running, hiking and mountain biking options whilst road cyclists are also spoilt for choice. For some amazing drone footage of our beautiful village and surrounding areas, see the highlights of the Quest Lough Derg Adventure Race from 2019 (Ross even makes a cameo appearance!) https://www.facebook.com/QuestIrelandAR/videos/582569162516463/

Buzzy restaurants
The area is renowned for its great restaurants. Lakeside dining in Flanagans on the Lake as well as more casual and cozy gastro pub food options in Goosers are also within walking distance. The infamous Matt the Threshers Inn, regular winner of Munster's gastro pub of the year, is a short 10 minute drive.
Cool bars
There are several cool pubs within walking distance - the Washerwoman and Liam O'Riains being two personal favourites. Other options include the Italian Wine bar / pizzeria Ponte Vecchio where you can browse the bookshop, drink wine and sample the pizza specialities on offer.
Cozy cafés
We are so lucky to have 3 of the coolest cafes, serving the best coffee in town. The Wooden Spoon and Raw Cafe are two of our favourites along with the French cafe across the bridge (where Amelie services the best patisseries in the region). Venture up to Birdhill (a 5 minute drive away) to sample the uber cool, adult only coffee roastery (and outdoor street food during the summer) of the Old Barracks. A must for every coffee connaisseur.
Retail therapy
The village has lots of shops to browse around. There is also a weekly farmers market held in an area known as Between the Waters every Sunday where you can buy locally produced food for your Sunday lunch and dinner.
Bit of culture
Several of the local pubs have live music as the weekend and there is live traditional Irish music in the Washerwoman every week.
Walks in the park
Clarisford park, on the shores of the River Shannon, is a short stroll away and if you are feeling energetic, you can take part in their free weekly 5k park run on Saturday mornings - for all levels. Kids are very welcome.
Spot of exercise
A sports enthusiast paradise! Sailing, kayaking, SUPing, swimming (outdoor and indoor), mountain biking, running, hiking, tennis, - plus one of Lough Derg’s two Blue Flag beaches (Twomilegate) and the neighbouring UL Sport Adventure Centre are just 10 minutes away. For rugby enthusiasts, Thomond Park - the home of Munster Rugby - is just a 20 minute drive away.
Day tripping
The Wild Atlantic Way (Cliffs of Moher, Doonbeg, Lahinch) are just an hour away by car. We are just 20 minutes drive from the historical Limerick City whilst Galway (European City of Culture and the BBC's foodie destination of the year) is just 1 hour away whilst Cork and Dublin are just under 2 hours away.
