About our home

We live in a spacious bungalow-type house with 7 rooms downstairs and two upstairs. The view to the back is across an open field, with pony and donkeys, to a low hill with forestry plantations on its crest.
We live on a country road where no two houses look the same and entrances can be hundreds of metres apart.

Ireland retains an old-world charm and is blessed with an amazing variety of scenery, mountains, lakes and sea.
The suburban train which takes you to Dublin city centre (about 45 minutes) follows the scenic coastline including views of Killiney Bay, often compared to the Bay of Naples.

James Joyce's famous novel, Ulysses, is set in Dublin. The city is a hub of literature, theatre and free admission art galleries. The 8th century parchment, The Book of Kells, can be seen in Trinity College.
Temple Bar in the city centre is the heart of the town's night life.

Our home is set in the countryside, right on the border with County Wickow, a mountainous area known as The Garden of Ireland where wild deer roam the forestry plantations. Along the shoreline are some protected areas for wildfowl that attract a stream of bird watchers.

The view from our house, across the fields at the back, is of a long low hill dominated by a 150 year-old chimney dating back to long abandoned lead mines and now a cherished feature of the landscape. Excellent for gentle hill walking.
A half-hour walk through the local park takes you to the coast with views of Bray Head and Dalkey Island framing Dublin Bay.

The town of Bray, ten minutes to the South, is best known for its mile long promenade skirting the beach and ending at the foot of the spectacular Bray Head.

Golf is available everywhere in Ireland. There are two excellent golf courses only five minutes drive from our house.

There is horse-racing at Leopardstown and rugby at Lansdowne Road. Every activity and interest is catered for in the city. Hurling, an extraordinary game unique to Ireland can be seen at Croke Park.

The whole of Ireland with its constantly changing and sometimes startling scenery can be traversed in a matter of days.

We enjoy a bright comfortable spacious dormer-style house, overlooking a large garden with shrubbery, patio, waterfall and pond. The bedrooms, one upstairs, two on the ground floor, two with their own toilet and shower ensuite.

We are surrounded by hills and green fields, yet only ten minutes walk from from buses (including the airport coach) and suburban trains. 10 minutes walk (two km) to the village shops. Ten miles to downtown Dublin.
1.5 miles, 3km, to the coast.

We live on a quiet leafy country road, with houses set well apart, surrounded by trees, with local villagers out for their daily walk, or jogging or cycling past our gate. Truly idyllic.

Quiet sun-facing patio and shrubs are set off by a half acre of grass and tall chestnut trees on the south boundary.

We love and take great care of our home.
Our children are grown and married but in constant contact. Paddy likes to spend his retirement in creative writing and has just completed his second novel, Children of Isaac, the story of one Dublin family during the 1916 Rising. Joan does some personal counselling and in her spare time likes to keep the garden looking its best.
We have undertaken more than ten home exchanges and are constantly on the lookout for new parts of the globe to explore.
