“Quiet place, flowery backyard and cozy house from where we explored the environment and took interesting trips to (a.o.) Dublin, south-east coast, Wicklow mountains and even Belfast. There's a small train station on short walking distance, adjacent to the residential This provides opportunities to travel easily. Clare and John have arranged plenty of information about Ireland. They proved to be very friendly and reliable people, left our house behind neatly. Communication was really nice. Car-exchange smoothly through Eindhoven, not a single problem. Commendable swap, thanks for your hospitality Clare and John!”
Clare's reviewsAs a host (2)
“We exchanged homes and cars this July with Clare and her family and it was great! The house is beautiful, we liked Leixlip very much and we fall in love with Ireland. Clare was great in the communication and everything went just fine. We even meet each other, but it was much to short. This was our second exchange and I hope we will have many more so excellent exchanges in the future! And we will 100% come to Ireland again. Thank you for this great experience!”
Where is it?
Leixlip is a small friendly village 16 km west of Dublin city. It was here that the first Guinness brewery was founded in 1755 and members of the Guinness family still live in Leixlip Castle in the village. We are situated on the river Liffey which flows on into Dublin City, and within 40 minutes of all the attractions of the capital. We border County Meath, the heritage capital of Ireland. Its two most interesting historic sites, Newgrange Megalithic Site and the Hill of Tara, are within 40 minutes of our home.
Going to Dublin from Leixlip is easy, train station and bus stop are minutes away from Leixlip. In Dublin the most popular sights are Guinness Storehouse in James St, the Phoenix Park (the largest walled park in Europe) which houses Dublin Zoo, and in the city centre Christchurch Cathedral, St. Patrick's Cathedral, and Trinity College, the oldest university in Britain or Ireland, where you can view the world famous medieval manuscript known as the Book of Kells.
Three lovely places to visit if you have children with you are "Imaginosity", Dublinia and Dublin Zoo. Dublin has a bike scheme (www.dublinbikes.ie) which is great for discovering the city. Irish Rail, which provides rail services throughout the country, offers a cheap rail ticket to senior citzens from overseas for travel throughout the country. Dublin is not large so walking around is a good option, www. hiddendublinwalks.ie is one of several good sites for walkers.
There is natural parkland to explore in Leixlip along the banks of the Liffey. A guided tour of Castletown House, a Palladian house nearby, built in 1722, will give you an insight into British influence in Ireland.
Leixlip is 6 km from the M50, the ring road motorway around Dublin, which connects to motorways to all other parts of Ireland. This means we are 30 minutes from the airport and the National Aquatic Centre to the north, and from historic Powerscourt House to the south. A little further south are the famous monastic site of Glendalough and the Wicklow mountains. The historic university town of Maynooth is 5 miles to the west of Leixlip.
We are on the edge of the country here with lots of small roads for cycling. John is a keen cyclist and can advise on lots of good routes, long and short. Leixlip has Ireland's best canoe club along the river Liffey and excellent tennis courts. There are several golf courses nearby including the K Club which hosted the Ryder Cup a few years ago.
