We offer a lovely home in one of the most scenic parts of the world. Portmagee is a sleepy fishing village just off the ring of Kerry set on the Iveragh Peninsula, adjacent to the famous Valentia Island.Portmagee has recently been announced as the first ever winner of Fáilte Ireland’s National Tourism Towns Award.
Our home is approximately one minute walk from the ocean with daily boating excursions to the Skellig Rocks http://www.skelligislands.com/, which is a world heritage site, deep sea diving and other boating trips. There are beautiful beaches nearby, as well as breath-taking walks to suit all abilities, from the casual stroller to the trekker to the mountain climber. The village boasts an award winning seafood restaurant and a local bar where Irish set dancing and traditional Irish music can be enjoyed throughout the week. The locality was a favourite of movie legend Charlie Chaplin who holidayed in nearby Waterville for a number of years. The ring of Kerry is a must-do trip and can be done over a few hours from our home. The locality offers a number of golf courses, cultural and historical attractions, fishing, fine restaurants and traditional Irish nightlife.
We are Neil and Paula and have two teenage children, Luke and Kathy. We have not done an exchange before but are keen to explore it because we are avid travellers, so it would suit our lifestyles and our pockets! Both of us work in media and both of our children are students. We are offering our second home for the exchange, which we love very much, it has never been rented and is very much an extension of our family home in an area that we truly love.
Portmagee is a stunning sleepy fishing village in its own right but also is an ideal base to tour the world famous ring of Kerry. It is located in south Kerry, on the west coast of Ireland, on Kerry's Iveragh peninsula south of Valentia Island. The magnificent Skellig Islands lie 8 miles (12 km) off the coast of Portmagee in South West Kerry. Rising majestically from the sea, Skellig Michael towers 714ft. (218 metres) above sea level. On the summit of this awe-inspiring rock you will find a remarkably well preserved sixth century monastic settlement. On the spectacular Small Skelligs 23,000 pairs of gannet nest on every available ledge making it the second largest gannet colony in the world. A visit to this major tourist attraction may well be the highlight of your holiday. You will be situated in an ideal base for The Ring of Kerry, which is a tourist trail and part of the mystical & unspoilt region of Ireland that has attracted visitors for hundreds of years. Its spectacular beauty is beyond question and it is a natural centre for outdoor pursuits that include golf, watersports, cycling, walking, running, riding and the very best fishing in freshwater rivers for salmon & trout and at sea for bass, ray, pollack, conger eel, cod, flounder, wrasse, mullet, mackerel and tuna.
The Ring of Kerry has some of the Europe's finest beaches (See Rossbeigh in the Ross-Maine area) that provide all the facilities for a traditional seaside holiday. Above all, the Ring of Kerry provides an amazing insight into the ancient heritage of Ireland - see the Iron Age Forts & Ogham Stones, Old Monasteries and a landscape carved out of rock by the last Ice Age 10,000 years ago. Visitors to Ireland should not miss a trip to the beautiful Ring of Kerry.
