About our home
We are a semi-retired couple who live in the seaside town of Sligo in the northwest of Ireland. Our home is a large modern 5 bedroomed house located in a quiet cul-de-sac 1km from the centre of Sligo and all its amenities such as restaurants, cinema, theatre, art gallery, shops, pubs etc. Sligo, which has a population of circa 25,000 people, is located in an area of spectacular natural beauty with sea, mountains, rivers and lakes surrounding the town. It is situated between Lough Gill 4km to the east and the Atlantic Ocean 8km to the west and has the Garavogue River running through it from the lake to the sea. To see Sligo from the air the following is a must see video http://www.sligotown.net/
There are wonderful beaches within a short drive of our home and an abundance of outdoor activities including walking on hills and along rivers, lakes and beaches, cycling, swimming, sailing, water sports, fishing, golf etc. In addition Sligo is within easy driving distance of Counties Mayo and Donegal which offer many more attractions to visitors and are well worth a visit.
There are also many heritage sites around Sligo including Carrowmore Megalithic Cemetery (6km) which has monuments five thousand years old, Parke’s Castle (10km) an early 17th century castle picturesquely situated on the shores of Lough Gill, Sligo Abbey which dates from the mid - 13th century is located in the centre of Sligo. Further afield there are numerous other historical sites including Creevykeel, Carrowkeel, Ceide Fields, Glenveigh National Park, the Walled City of Derry, and Giant's Causeway, a UNESCO world heritage site, which is a 3 hour drive away,
The nearest airport to Sligo is Knock which is a 45 minute drive away. Dublin and Belfast Airports are both about 21/2 hours drive away.
