About our home

Our Family:
We are a family of four: --
Mike (53) and Paula (48), Thomas, who is 15 years and James, who is 13 years old. The boys have been on all our exchanges and are well behaved. The boys love soccer, swimming and listening to music. We are all Bruce Springsteen and Kings of Leon fans here. Mike and the boys play guitar and I just love listening to them all!
Mike is a math’s teacher and I am a Landscape designer.

Our House:
Our house is over 100 year’s old, with 3 bedrooms. A quaint house with great character, which has been recently renovated. We have a back garden and deck, which has beautiful views of surrounding mountians and Croagh Patrick, the sea and countryside. We are only 8 minutes’ walk from town and the about same to the harbour.

Our Town
Westport - VOTED THE BEST PLACED TO LIE IN IRELAND IN 2012!
We are located on the Wild Atlantic Way http://www.greenway.ie/
and Great Western Greenway http://www.greenway.ie/

We live just outside the centre of the town of Westport, in a very beautiful and friendly part of the West of Ireland. The town has a very relaxed atmosphere with a great diversity of people and nationalities. A lot of artists and musicians are attracted to the place.
Westport is a lovely town (of course we are biased, having been born and reared here). All our other house exchangers loved the town and the surroundings.
You can look up some information from the following :

The town is famous for its variety of restaurants and pubs. Matt Mulloy from the Chieftains has a pub in town. You'll catch good music there.
The town also has 5 indoor swimming pools, 2 golf courses, horse riding, sea and river fishing and Westport House Estate.
From our back garden you can see Croagh Patrick, a famous holy mountain from our house. It’s about 5 miles away and is a challenging but manageable climb. There is a pilgrimage climb in July but people climb it every day.
We have great walk/cycle ways around our town and you can cycle from Westport to Achill (if you want to!) along the Great Western Greenway...it has won several awards and we have2 adult and 2 teen bikes for you to use.
You can fish at the local river (we have kid’s rods for you to use)
Westport House is a great place to day trip to anyway, it has a zorb and zip wire.
The harbour is only a 10 minute walk from our house with great places to eat and walk about, and there are many "Blue Flag" beaches from 8-20km from our house. The surrounding beaches are great for surfing.
Westport is a great location for so many places in Ireland, as it’s a relatively small country, Dublin is 3.5 hours away, Cork about the same, There is so much to do on day trips locally or your could plan a few days elsewhere on a longer drive...

1 hour south to Galway, Westport is an ideal location to visit this lively town with culture and atmosphere. They hold a famous Art's Festival in July.
We are a 1 hour drive north to Sligo; North Mayo has a stunning coast line; we are close to Connemara; blue flag beaches and surfing beaches; you can climb various mountains and admire coastal and other beautiful landmarks close by.
There are some great islands on the coast to go on a day trip or stay over, and maybe you will catch some dolphins on the way. Inish Boffin is our favourite. We are a drive from the Cliff of Moher. Lough Key Forest Park is over an hour’s drive and they have a great indoor puzzle game for all the family and a really great zip wire obstacle course.

Through house swapping we travelled to southern France in 2000, also travelled to Grenoble, France, during the summer of 2002, Auray in Brittany in 2003, Caen, France in 2005, Perpignan, France, 2006, Barcelona 2006, Vigo, Spain 2007, Barcelona, Spain 2008, Barcelona Easter 2009, San Cezaire (near Nice), in July 2010 and Guingamp, France in 2011, and USA in 2014

We found all the exchanges a wonderful experience and we are looking forward to our next exchange.
