My apartment is in a small building in the middle of the big city. It has high ceilings and windows that face 3 directions letting in lots of beautiful light and air. The balcony faces west, towards the beach, with gorgeous sunsets and always a sea breeze. The recent renovation means the kitchen and the bathroom are clean and lovely to use. The bedroom is cozy and easy to keep cool or warm depending on the season. The living room is expansive and it opens to the balcony, which seems to be everyone's favorite spot. I set it up Indian style, with rugs and mattress and pillows on the floor. Orange walls and an outdoor railing shelf filled with plants top off the aesthetic and spiritual experience.
There is no elevator in the building and the apartment is on the third floor. This is not a problem usually, though for some people climbing steps my be prohibitive. The climb though is worth it. The apartment is on top of everything and with no building directly in front, the expanse of air and light and space is enchanting.
I am a former New Yorker who has been living in Israel a little over 20 years. Until last year, I lived in the Galilee and then I decided I wanted to return to urban life. Hence an apartment in the heart of the heart and a recent renovation. I am a writer and an academic who teaches literature at the university. A beautiful and serene environment are very important to me, obvious to all who visit me in my new home.
The apartment is located in the heart of the heart of Tel Aviv... between the two Dizengoffs: Dizengoff Square and Dizengoff Center, but on a small side street. It is located in the back of the building which means it is even quieter. But you go down to the street and make a right or a left to the major nearby streets and you are in the thick of things: cafes, restaurants, boutiques. The beach is about a 5 minute walk in one direction. The major cultural centers: the Tel Aviv Museum, the Opera House, Habimah Theater, Mann Auditorium, etc. are a 10 minute walk in the other direction. The Carmel Market is a 10 minute walk in another direction. All the buses going everywhere in the city pass near here making all neighborhoods easily accessible, if you don't feel like walking.
Lively, hopping, filled with beautiful Bauhaus buildings, near historic streets and the trendiest night life to boot, what can I say..... this neighborhood really has it all.
