About our home

Casa Fontana is a retreat where you can get away from it all.

Sited at 700m altitude, nestled in the foothills of Mount Monviso, Casa Fontana sits in its own 3 acres of land - one acre of which is a managed wood. This traditional northern Italian house has been lovingly restored to a very high standard, but remains simply furnished, remaining true to its rustic roots. The property will be available for its first guests from the beginning of June 2015. It is suitable for habitation all year round.

The house is located five kilometres from the town of Bagnolo Piemonte. To reach the house you drive through a beautiful mountainous forest (all tarmacked roads) to find a private and peaceful place, to relax and enjoy. The house and garden, of Casa Fontana, overlook the plains of Piemonte and the views from the garden are breathtaking.

This particular part of Italy, the north-westerly corner, bordering the French Alps, is almost completely undiscovered. It is not on the Italian tourist trail and it is here that you can see and experience the 'real' Italy. The area is renowned for its food & wine.

The house features two double bedrooms with queen-sized beds, two bathrooms (one of which is en-suite), a kitchen/dining room, a lounge and a utility room. The house has been completely restored and redecorated throughout, using Italian tiles and the local Luserna stone. The new central heating system is fired via a wood pellet biomass boiler (situated in one of the outside storerooms). There is a beautifully large Dovre wood burner in the lounge and a smaller Dovre wood burner in the kitchen/dining room. One of the bedrooms has an open fire. Firewood will be supplied for a small cost (after the first complimentary two baskets).

The water for the house is supplied courtesy of the mountain springs.

Piemonte (translation is 'the foot of the hills') is one of Italy's largest regions. It is a land of mountains, surrounded on three sides by the Alps – with the Alps forming the background for picturesque and beautiful sweeping valleys.

At its heart, is the capital of Piemonte, Turin (Torino) - an eclectic City, that combines baroque palaces with contemporary architecture.

This is the region that produces some of the best wines in Italy including Barbaresco, Barbera, Gavi, Arneis, and 'The King of Wines', Barolo.

The fertile calcareous soil and unique geography of this region produces some of the world's best food products such as Risotto rice, Porcini mushrooms, Gorgonzola cheese and the famous White Truffle from Alba. Alba is also the birthplace of the “Slow Food” movement i.e. everything that fast food is not.

The immediate area around Casa Fontana is rural and decidedly quirky. It has its own unique character that needs to be experienced. Although English is little spoken, the local people are very friendly, and you will have few problems in the local shops or supermarkets.

The local town of Bagnolo Piemonte has a number of interesting shops, cafes, restaurants, a supermarket, a Post Office and a pharmacy. The very lively market is held in the town Piazza on a Wednesday morning.

There are a number of charming ancient towns and villages quite close too. Amongst these are:

Cavour (10km) – famous for its fruit growing and 'Apple trail'.
Saluzzo (29km) – with its medieval historic centre, exhibitions and feasts throughout the entire year.
Racconigi (38km) – with its Royal Castle and huge park
Cuneo (62km) – founded in 1198 – not very well known, but it will surprise you!
Barolo (76km) – world famous for its wine and vineyards
Turin (57km) – incredible shopping, architecture, café culture & chocolate!
The Langhe Region (79km) – with its castles and vineries – world famous
Pinerolo (18km) – a fine large town, which has also featured on the Tour De France cycling route
Sestiere (74km) – where the 2006 Winter Olympics were held
