About our home

Our beautiful family home is nestled in the Italian alps just 20-25 minutes north of Lake Como and 1 hour from St. Moritz in Switzerland. It is located in Valchiavenna, a few minutes from Chiavenna itself, a picturesque and bustling small town with many restaurants, cafés, and shops. In the summer months guests can swim in a number of waterfalls, splash pools, and Lake Como itself. In the winter access to the local ski resort, Madesimo, is only 20 minutes away by car. An endless number of hiking trails make it possible to explore the stunning mountains surrounding the house year round. The valley is also crisscrossed by a network of bike paths that make traveling between neighboring towns easy and fun. The area is fantastic for rock-climbing, alpine climbing, canyoning, and in the winter, ski-touring.

Our house has recently been renovated and in classic Italian style is divided into two separate apartments (The main home is up a few steps from the driveway, while below that lies the smaller second apartment). The main home and the smaller ground floor apartment have completely separate entrances.

The main apartment (which includes the second floor mansarda/attic) is much larger and is where we live with our three small kids and is the main space available for home swapping. It has been completely renovated and has underfloor heating throughout. The kitchen/living area is a light filled and open plan space with stunning mountain views on three sides. A 3 meter sliding glass door opens from this living space onto a large terrazzo that is a wonderful spot to enjoy a meal or an aperitivo while admiring the views and the mountain air. The kitchen is spacious and features a 6 burner Smeg range, wood countertops, and all modern appliances (microwave, dishwasher, large fridge/freezer). There is also a futon couch that can sleep two people comfortably if needed. There are two bedrooms on the first floor, one with a queen bed and the second bedroom has bunkbeds. There is also a baby crib available if needed or a third single bed can be put in the "kids" bedroom. The large still-to-be-renovated attic on the 2nd floor houses the washing machine and a big space for drying clothes indoors, plus a small sunny balcony for outdoor drying. The home has Wifi for guests use and a large (50 inch) tv screen which guests can use for watching Netflix through our account.

The ground-floor apartment is also available if the family coming to stay is larger than will fit in our residence on the first floor. It consists of two bedrooms (one with a double bed, and the second room can have either a double bed OR two single beds), one bathroom and a cosy kitchen/living room area.

The house is surrounded on all sides by a fenced-in, garden which gets sun year round. During the summer, there is a large vegetable and herb garden. There are garden furniture and kids toys available for guest use.

The house is situated in a pretty quiet village with a small supermarket, 2 cafés, and train station just 5 minutes walk away. Walking 5 minutes in the opposite direction brings you to a mountain stream and wooded trails. Chiavenna is accessible by foot in 20 minutes via a bike path, 5 minutes via train, or in 2 minutes by car.
