About our home

We have been living here since last year when we bought a 54 year old Japanese house and converted it to suit our modern life. There are solar panels on the top creating electricity and we try to be as environmentally friendly as we can in our lifestyle. We are avid cyclist and there are a variety of bicycles you can use if you stay at our home (2 for kids too). Our house is tucked behind a large rice patty in a very quiet neighborhood. We have a bamboo forest growing up above our neighborhood. We have built a wooden deck/terrace on the side of the main room where we spend many enjoyable days and evenings relaxing and talking. We have a small garden with fruit trees and flowers, we are also trying to grow some vegetables. We have a large bathroom/toilet downstairs that is new as of last year and a toilet upstairs. There are 3 small bedrooms upstairs, a small kitchen and a large main room. Downstairs is the kitchen dining area, small office, bath/toilet and TV/game room. From our house, it is a 5 minute walk to a 24 hour supermarket (with many western foods), 15 minute walk to the main Hiroshima station (or a short taxi ride) and 25 minutes to the new Carp baseball stadium. It takes 15-25 minutes to cycle into the town center (along the riverside paths) or there are bus stops near our house that can take you there in about the same time.

More about us

  1. We have been living in Japan for many years now and our kids (7) and (3) are in Japanese school. I grew up in Hawaii and my husband (I met in Japan) is from the UK. We are both university teachers and in our free time we run the website: (See the Homepage) about events, places to see, dining and more- hopefully everything someone living here or visiting needs to know about Hiroshima.

** We have done a hospitality host for a family of 6 for a night who were passing through in 2009. We also did a hospitality host for a couple for a few nights in March, 2010. We have an exchange arranged with a French family from 8/7-8/23 (2010) and another French traveler from 8/23-9/10 (2010)

Where is it?

Neighbourhood

Hiroshima is a great city. The city has wide streets in the city center, good shopping that you can walk around to all the shopping areas without dealing with cars and traffic much. Of course, a rich history- A-bomb dome and peace park are main attractions, but Miyajima island with its giant red Torii gate in the water and floating shrine has also been designated a world heritage sight. There are many islands to discover near the city and there are many wonderful hikes you can do accessible by train or very near our house. In summer, there are beaches and fun summer festivals held near the city. In spring the cherry blossoms bloom and in autumn everything vibrates red, Winter is cold, but sunny and beautiful and a good season for hiking, hot spring onsens, there is also skiing and snowboarding a short bus journey away.
I'm afraid our car cannot be used unless you hold a Japanese driver's license, but if you want to rent a car, please let us know and I will make sure the parking space in front of the house is available for you to use. Our home has very good access to all the public transport in Hiroshima city, and we have bicycles that you can use if you prefer. Two of our bicycles can carry small children and we have 2 small bikes for children- one with training wheels (stabilizers) and one without for bigger kids.
