About our home

4-bedroomed home built just 12 years ago, all modern and solar-powered. 4 spacious bedrooms plus study/living area with internet access. 2 rooms double bed, 2 rooms single beds. Also 1 X double futon, 2 X single futon available to add into bedrooms, so can sleep up to 10 if needed.

Heated toilet/bidet up and downstairs, shower and jacuzzi-bath with radio. Washing/drying machine and laundry-balcony.
Modern kitchen including IH cooker, microwave, dishwasher. Beautiful, traditional Japanese tatami-mat room with paper-screens downstairs. Air-conditoners/fans/heaters. TV, CD, DVD, Wii. Plenty of kids toys and books.

Small garden with BBQ, and quiet street for kids to play in (park nearby). We don't have a car (we've never found it necessary in this location) but you can use our bicycles - 4 adults, 1 child - plus helmets.

Our house is in a quiet, safe and much sought-after neighbourhood with excellent access to bus, trains, trams. With city views but set beside a lush, green mountain it is truly an ideal location.
5 minutes walk from local shops and bus-stop to city centre (10-15 min bus ride, or 15 mins by bicycle). 24hr supermarket 5 mins by bicycle.
Big sports centre 15 minute walk featuring 50m swimming pool or ice-rink in winter. Kids park, peaceful rose-garden, river-side walking/jogging all nearby.

Hiroshima is infamously known as the first location to suffer a nuclear attack. It is now known as an International City of Peace, shoppers' paradise, home to exciting restaurants and night-life with museums, art galleries, parks, mountains and sea. Beautiful temples, castle, and loads of kids' activities too.

Situated near Miyajima Island, designated one of the 3 most beautiful places in Japan. Check out these web-site if you want to know more about Hiroshima:

Access to Bullet-trains (Shinkansen) if you fancy day-trips to Kyoto, Nara, Osaka, Tokyo. What better way to see Japan?

Neighbourhood

Buzzy restaurants
There are several small restaurants nearby - Japanese, Italian, Indian and many more in the city. Eating out is relatively cheap, especially for lunch, and you can buy boxed lunches (bento) in the supermarkets too.
Cool bars
A couple within walking distance and plenty of bars to choose from in the city.
Cozy cafés
Japan does not have a European style cafe culture but there are a couple within walking distance (one is a small gallery with local art/crafts). Lots of nice bakeries/cake shops!
Retail therapy
Shopping is the national pass time of Japan! You can find anything and everything: clothes, souvenirs, electronic goods, unusual snacks, exquisite art, pottery and lacquerware, massages, from department stores right down the the Y100 shop!
Bit of culture
Several art museums, the Peace Park Museum, Hiroshima castle is well worth a visit and a National Heritage shrine in nearby Fudoin (30 mins walk).
Walks in the park
A lovely rose garden is set in the hillside near us, about 15 mins on foot. It's also an entrance to the mountain hike around us, which is well worth a few hours walk for the fresh air and beautiful views. It's not a difficult climb (our kids did it together from around age 3) and you can manage it in sneakers. Some kids' playgrounds nearer the house. Also the beautiful, traditional Japanese Shukkeien Gardens just 10mins away by bicycle.
Spot of exercise
A big sports centre is just a 10 min walk away. It has a 50m pool (as well as smaller ones for kids), which turns into an ice-rink in the winter. There's a walking/running course around the nearby river too. For those with kids, there's a fun, open-air family pool in the city, a 15min cycle ride away.
Day tripping
Miyajima, designated one of the 3 most beautiful places in Japan, is only 30mins by local train, Iwakuni is about 50 mins by local train and well worth a visit. You can use the Shinkansen (bullet train) to speed you to Kyoto, Nara, Okayama, Osaka or Tokyo.
