About our home

Our home is large (600 m2), simple and spacious. Built around a courtyard it has big rooms, and a wide, comfortable veranda opening onto a garden which runs down to the river. The peaks of Mt Kenya are visible from the house, just 30km away. 5 bedrooms makes plenty of room for friends. We have a great cook and Mary helps with laundry and cleaning. We also have a walled swimming pool over to the side of the house as well as 3 friendly dogs - Enzo, Po and Aphrodite who all love to be taken for a walk on our farm in the evenings. The farm is 200 acres (90ha) in area so gives plenty of space for a ramble.

More about us

  1. We're a couple with three grown kids, three dogs and a beautiful farm

  2. John is a farmer and grows organic aromatic plants which he distils into essential oils. Penny uses these to make a range of natural personal care items which are used in Kenya's boutique hotels.

  3. John is a keen photographer and Penny is a painter. Our interest in colour, space and style is reflected in our house which we designed and built ourselves.

Where is it?

Our home is situated at 1850m at the foot of Mount Kenya. It's a perfect base from which to climb the mountain. We live in Laikipia which is famous for its wildlife, national parks and game sanctuaries. The area where we live is rural and our house is situated on a 200 acre farm where we grow aromatic plants for the distillation of essential oils. The rest of the farm is left wild as a sanctuary for a large number of birds and some smaller wildlife such as bush bucks, duiker, bush babies and colobus monkeys. Nanyuki town is 24km away. There you’ll find shops, cafes, hotels, banks, a modern hospital and even a casino.
