Jim and I are a retired couple from the US who live in Mexico, on beautiful Lake Chapala, just south of Guadalajara. Rather than being a "resort" destination, Ajijic, the town on the lake where we live, is the home to mostly many US and Canadian expats, as well as expats from all over the world. With notably among the places with the best weather in the world, Ajijic is at an elevation of one mile (like Denver), semi-arid (low humidity), with moderate temperatures all year around (hence, no air conditioning or heat required).
We have cooler weather in January, when you need a sweater, and hotter weather in May, but with little humidity. Otherwise, we enjoy an amazing lifestyle that we want to share with exchangers. We have two bedrooms, a den with a sofa-bed and a separate TV room. The kitchen is fully equipped and great for anyone who loves to cook or entertain. The terrace and garden provide an inviting area to relax. The balcony off of the master bedroom has a large whirlpool tub, outside with the birds and waving trees.
One one hour from Guadalajara and 30 minutes from a truly international airport, it is easy to travel to or from this area.
Our home is in a gated, country club-like community, just west of town, right on Lake Chapala, Mexico's largest lake. There are 70 homes in the neighborhood, many owned by families in Guadalajara who come here only on the weekends. The community boasts a club, which houses its own wonderful, inexpensive restaurant, full bar, swimming pool with two hot tubs (one for families and one for adults only), two clay tennis courts, a fully equipped gym and beautiful grounds, situated right on the lake.
The facilities are open to guests when we are not here on the weekdays, but not on the weekends, as the other owners and their guests have first right to use the club facilities. Although not exactly walking distance to town (about 2 miles away), we may consider providing use of one car.
Our many markets, food, clothing, jewelry and other crafts, offer wonderful shopping. There are several live theaters, including a reader's theater with monthly presentations. Symphony, opera simulcast from New York, excellent restaurants, live music for dancing or enjoyment and so much more is found here. There are hiking groups, a Bridge club, the Lake Chapala Society which has exercise and language classes and much more, a golf course, thermal pools only 10 minutes away, easily accessible bus transportation and groups for every interest.
