We have owned this home for over 24 years. It is our heart's place. We restored it from a ruin with good bones and did little to alter the layout.
We found hints of how color was used which guided us in our own color sensibilities.
We spend a lot of time in the house mornings and late afternoons as the sun changes and recolors everything. Back light on the garden is glorious and views from the roof overlooking the town are beautiful with the main cathedral lit at night.
We have a wonderful cook who has been with us since the beginning of our adventures in San Miguel. She arrives between noon and 1 p.m. to prepare the 2:30 comida. We like to eat lunch at home as you can have more fruits and vegetables at home and Juana is such a good cook. You are responsible for the grocery shopping. Juana will put all fruits and vegetables into clean soaking water with purification drops for 20 minutes before any uses, cooked or eating raw. But there are plenty of restaurants to to choose from for lunch and dinner, a time to walk back into town for a little music and margaritas.
We have bottled water in the kitchen for all drinking and cooking. We do not have a filter system as they break down and need a lot of attention. Each bathroom has a carafe of clean water from the bottled water.
Our very helpful manager lives next door and speaks Spanish and English.
We are wheelchair accessible from the entry to the roof.
We are a 4 minutes walk from the Jardin and center of town with the beautiful cathedral (the Parrochia). churchbells from the many churches ring all day and sometimes quite early in the morning. There are also annoying firecrackers in the early morning some days, but after a while they are less annoying. This is Mexico! Visit Guanajuato, another historic town 45 minutes away by bus or car with a beautiful center as well as Dolores Hidalago, where hand made ceramic tiles are made that are shipped everywhere. Another trip is to Querataro whose center has been restored and a farther away trip to see the butterflies or pyramids.
There is a large market everyday and on Tuesday a giant market a 5 minute cab or bus ride away with old clothes, hardware, fruits, vegetables, seafood and birds. There is also a large supermarket, the Mega.
Mexican wines are good and cheap, the liquor store in el centro very helpful for your selections.
