About our home

We are pretty lucky that we are living in the house of our dreams, and we are ready to share it with you!

Our typical dike house is situated only ten minutes by bike or metro away from the city center on one of the loveliest dikes around Amsterdam, the Nieuwendammerdijk. (Google Nieuwendammerdijk and you will get the idea). Best of both worlds. The house was build around 1910 and still has all its old characteristics. It has a spectaculair view of the Vliegenbos (our local urban forest) that is situated right behind our garden. The garden is a paradise, facing south, spacious, quiet, private. Behind the garden there is a large communal wooded area that we share with the other residents. It is a perfect place for kids to roam around and meet other kids. There are some swings and a slide, a trampoline, treehouses and a lot else to discover. Where the forest starts, there is a fence though, so it is perfectly safe. But it is still very quiet: visitors without children will enjoy the garden and the green surroundings just as much.

The house is light and sunny and has a vacation home feel to it.
There is a livingroom combined with a kitchen on streetlevel.
Upstairs there are three bedrooms. Not the spacious kind, but very comfortable. One room has a double bed and the other two have a queen size bed, that can each sleep either 1 adult or 2 children. One of the bedrooms has a big balcony overlooking the Vliegenbos. There is also a small 2nd bathroom on this floor with a sink and toilet.

On the garden level, there is a second livingroom that we use as a play/tv room. The bathroom with bath and shower is on this floor as well.

It is a charming, happy home, that you will certainly enjoy, whether you travel with kids or not. We have a cat called Bella that is really sweet and low-maintenance, but she does need to be fed (just dry food) once a day.

More about us

  1. We are a family of four. A screenwriter/director and a translator of 50 and 54 years old. We have two daughters, they are 15 and 17 years old. We love to cook, read, make music and explore the world! We especially like to visit Southern Europe, North Africa and Latin America.

We are city-dwellers and sometimes like to explore other cities, but mostly we prefer to really go back to nature, away from the crowds to hike, swim, read and cook with the local produce. Somewhere warm! We don't mind the heat.
We have had one exchange up till now and it was very successful. We normally have friends or family members stay in our house when we are not there, so we are used to sharing our house. We love the idea that others can enjoy our house while we are away.

We are very responsible people and will take very good care of your house too!

  2. We are looking for a swap for the summer of 2022 in Southern Europe. We are flexible in between the 18th of July and the 22 of august. We prefer a longer swap (2 or 3 weeks) but one week is also fine!

Neighbourhood

The well loved Nieuwendammerdijk is one of the oldest streets in Amsterdam. It offers a village-feel and green surroundings but at the same time it is very close to the city center. Villages like Schellingwoude and Durgerdam and typical Dutch countryside are right on your doorstep (where you can go biking, hiking and swimming in the summer), but it takes only a ten minute trip by bike and ferry or by metro into the city center.

If you ever make it to the center that is...

The North of Amsterdam has become quite the hip and happening hotspot lately. With the Eye Museum, Adam tower, NDSM wharf, and multiple excellent restaurants and café's to choose from. Some of our favorites are actually very close by.

Bike or hike around beautiful Waterland. In the summer there are also plenty of spots nearby to go swimming and fishing. Take a stroll or go for a picknick in the nearby Vliegenbos or the Noorderpark.

You are welcome to borrow our bikes, if you promise to lock them!
Biking back at night from the city is perfectly safe by the way.
You can park you car in our private parking space in front of the house.

In the summer you will find it hard to leave the house though. Most of our guests enjoy the garden too much...
