About our home

February/March: looking for Belgium, Germany, northern France, if possible pet friendly
April/May: Italy
July/August: Jutland Denmark and or South of Sweden, preferably during this trip bringing our mini dasdog, so looking for pet friendly home in the summer.

Since 2011 we have been swapping with our previous home but in the summer of 2017 we moved to the historical centre of Utrecht, to what is known as the museum quarter.
We live in the top apartment, on the second and third floor with an amazing view on the famous old canal and its bustling life on the water. When entering you will find a large living and dining area with fire place and lots of light from windows facing the waterside. The kitchen is new and fully equipped with all amenities, from here you have direct access to the gem: our roof terrace with another stunning view to the Mediaeval garden. It's a quiet place to relax from early spring into the autumn.
Renovated bathroom with shower renovated as well as the separate w.c.
On the top floor you find two bedrooms, both with two double beds, one king and one queen. There's a small office space in between the two rooms.
Some stairs, but not steep, no lift and not really needed either.

Children are more than welcome but I'm afraid we don't have a specific kids room (still some LEGO left though). It's well suited for families with older children, couples alone or even two couples.
Parking is paid only or with residential license. If you need to come by car, there are various options for parking at the outskirts or in the parking areas (R+P) for a daily fee. See options described later on. Public transport is the easiest option, it's 30 min from Amsterdam airport, 15 minutes on foot from the largest train station in the country (Utrecht CS). This connects to all major stations in the Netherlands directly and to the airport.

More about us

  1. We are a couple with adult kids no longer living at home. Sometimes one or more of them will join us, but often we will travel alone as a couple. We have arranged 20 successful swaps so far. We aim to find places with a homely atmosphere and people who like the concept as much as we do.
Many of the reviews on this site have been made by guests who stayed in our previous home in Amersfoort. Information on garden and location and such is therefore no longer applicable but our hospitality has not changed. Reviews from 2019 are related to our new home in Utrecht NL).
In daily life we work as a management consultant and as a grammar school teacher. We enjoy reading, films, traveling, good wine and dining and going to the theatre. We are all careful and considerate with the places we are in and will treat your house as our own.
We have a tiny dasdog kaninchen (3,5 kg) that we would love to bring if she is welcome.

  2. We specifically enjoy the cultural part of home exchange; the personal contact and information you exchange about your location that you would never get by conventional travel. This way we have had so many great experiences and met so many nice, welcoming people.

  3. We love flee markets, ceramics mid century design, museums, architecture and parks.
We would love to bring our tiny Dasdog Kaninchen (3,5 kg) whenever she is welcome in your home. She will not be there during your stay at our home of course.

Where is it?

Neighbourhood

If you, like we, are tired of too many tourists but still want the buzz of history, canals and museums Utrecht is the right choice. Utrecht is a well kept city centre full of good restaurants and bars, culture and shopping opportunities. On the water there's a lot of activity, boats, canoes, sups and tourist sightseeing boats are passing by. Enjoy the view from the waterfront and act as a local drinking wine or having dinner while people are passing by on the water. We are literally in the heart of the centre and within walking distance of everything.

We are situated in what is known as the museum area with various important museums. Most houses, like ours are protected cultural heritage. You won't need a car, in fact it's in your way as there's no parking spot and parking is pricy. If you travel by car check the affordable options to park long term (more than a day tichet) at P&R Utrecht locations.
In the city we mostly walk or use a bike which is much faster.
http://www.slimutrechtin.nl is a site for parking information.

Easy acccess to connection to Schiphol Airport (30 minutes by train). The residential city of The Hague 40 minutes by train, Rotterdam the same. Amsterdam you will reach in 25 minutes . The train station Utrecht CS is the biggest in the Netherlands with connections to all corners of the country. You walk there in 10-15 minutes.

Closeby you will find a shopping area with supermarkets as well. On Saturday you walk to the food market for fresh produce.

Buzzy restaurants
We like cafe West out of the city centre, on Vleutenseweg but also Madeleine just around the corner. Good food but a little more pricy than average. But worth it. adres: het Wed.
Cool bars
Cafe Belgium, Tivoli Vredenburg
Cozy cafés
Springhaver
Retail therapy
Favorite is Twijnstraat, a collection of boutiques and daily groceries. Wine and beer speciality stores, good bakers, fine butcher and fish monger.
Bit of culture
The Dom obviously, many nice hidden gems behind the houses of the canals; hidden gardens and yards to be discovered.
Walks in the park
around the old city wall there's a nice park: Zocher park. We have a guide book available for many different walks in and around Utrecht.
Spot of exercise
see the park indicated,
Day tripping
Amsterdam, Rotterdam, the Hague, the beach, Spakenburg, Amersfoort, the Velluwe, beaches around Haarlem
