Maria's reviewsAs a host (17)
“We've spent an extended week-end in Maria's lovely family house. It was our first exchange and it couldn't have been better. The communication with the family was impeccable and we really hit if off. The house was lovely and we had enough space for our three children! They could enjoy the garden which best attraction for them was of course the trampoline! We especially liked the area around the house with modern architecture! Just behind the house there was a great park to play, an animal farm for the kids and a pancake house. As we were with three little children and therefore not that mobile it's worth to mention! We visited Amersfoort city centre which is very nice and we visited the Dutch Kings palace in Apeldoorn. It was very child friendly there. So the location of the house offers both: culturally interesting spots (a lot of Dutch cities nearby) but also having the possibility to relax! We enjoyed the week-end very much.”
“We have spent a wonderful days at Maria, Leo and family home. Their house is very nice, confortable and well located. We have been in Amsterdam , Utrecht , National Park Hoge Veluwe , Efteling Park, Edam, Marken Volendam .. and Mills of Kinderdijk ... all very nice places. Thanks Maria , Leo and family for sharing your wonderful home!”
“Leo and Maria have a very nice and comfortable house. We were welcomed with a dinner. Our two little children were very happy to play with all the toys that Maria lent. The trempoline in the garden is wonderful. In the Netherlands, we have visited Amersfoort (beautiful old city center), Utrecht, Delft (and bought china), the Hoge Veluwe parc and its museum, and enjoyed a boat trip in Rotterdam. Due to its central location, every spot in the Netherlands is close from the house. And of course, a very nice rest time in this big house.”
“We have had a wonderful week in this lovely spacious home. The garden is fantastic. The location is excellent for exploring the Netherlands. Maria, Leo and their family looked after our home very well. Highly recommended”
“Staying in Maria and Leo’s home was an amazing experience. Their home is pastoral and modern with a unique Netherlands’s flavor. It is a contemporary three level home that is comfortable and fun with a bright kitchen made for fine cooking and gatherings. We especially loved their back yard, perfect for kids and outdoor enjoyment---Maria’s plants, flowers and trees were beautiful and delightful. Their neighborhood is designed for families and is close to small restaurants, shops, a children’s farm, lots of play areas and a “Pancake House” that has no American equivalent. We found community garden plots and farm animals tucked right into the heart of the neighborhood, Coming from the freeways of California, the 'Cadillac' bicycles and paved bike lanes of Amersfoort, were awesome. We biked everywhere we could, loaded the bike baskets with cheeses and vegetables and eggs, and chatted with many of the local people. Oh, and then those ever present canals! The swans that the locals take for granted, never ceased to make us stop and gawk, and enjoy their beauty. Maria and Leo’s canal had a captivating swan family with 8 swanlings (beautiful ducklings to us), which we watched turning from grey to dazzling white. If we didn’t bike, we took the bus or train. We loved the close by old medieval town of Amersfoort which is inhabited by delightful, friendly people. The walled city charmed us with its historic tower and museums, modern internet coffee shops, wonderful restaurants and history. Holland's amazing cheeses were available everywhere, even in the tiny groceries. The outdoor Markets with fresh fruit and vegetables and local fish and old world atmosphere were exciting. Amsterdam with its big city feel and famous museums is 'nearby' on the train. We traveled around the country to see the Northern Fishing Village of Spakenburg where some of the women still wear traditional clothing, and went the other direction to the Outdoor Museum in Arnhem where many historic old cultural buildings and ways of living are preserved. Our visit was relaxing, enriching and gave us just a small taste of the spirit and strength of the Dutch people. We are so glad that we exchanged homes Leo and Maria and their family!”
We spent Easter 2012 in the home of Maria and Leo. A spacious house in a varied new part of Amersfoort. Ideal location to explore the Netherlands, Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague and Utrecht are within an hour driving distance. Amersfoort is a beautiful and charming city. I can recommend an exchange with Maria and Leo to everyone.”
“We exchanged with Leo and Maria in August for one week. It's a large house with a garden and trampoline which was perfect for relaxing when needed. It's in a great location with easy options for different types of activity. The house is in a very pleasant location and we spent some time just walking around the local area appreciating how much better the dutch do town planning than any other country I've been to. There's a petting zoo 5 minutes walk away we kept getting drawn back to and, as you would expect, an excellent network of cycle tracks. Further afield there are plenty of interesting places to visit: Amersfoort is lovely, Bunschoten-Spakenburg market is worth a day and Amsterdam is easily accessible by rail. Our house was spotless when our visitors left and Leo and Maria obviously took great care of our home. If you haven't been to the Netherlands I would highly recommend it for a holiday. It's a great country to visit, it puts people at the heart of civic planning, and the people are warm, helpful and friendly; Maria and Leo are great ambassadors for their country!”
“This summer was our first home exchange experience and we could not have hoped for more from Maria and Leo. Their house and garden are perfect for a family with kids. Maria suggested many things to do in the area and we visited many nice places that she recommended. Our house was taken great care of and left in immaculate condition. We would highly recommend an exchange with them.”
“From first contact, all was easy exchanging with this family. They were unfailingly warm and friendly, and it was clear what was expected on each side. Their house was clean, comfortable, and there was a lovely dinner waiting in the fridge for us. Amersfoort is a beautiful city, only 20 minutes cycle ride away, on what must be some of the best cycle paths in the world. No-one wears a cycle helmet as it's so safe! There are lovely shops and cafes and you can go on a boat trip round the city. Amsterdam, Utrecht, the coast, and the beautiful woods of the Veluwe are all nearby. A good range of supermarkets, restaurants, even IKEA are all within 20 minutes walk - 5 minutes cycle. This would be a great home for families with young children, through to older teenagers to visit. We'd happily come again!”
“We are a family from Copenhagen who spend 12 days in July 2020 in Marias and Leos lovely apartment in Utrecht. The apartment is charming and cosy and placed in the middle of the center with plenty of shops, restaurants and cafees. The rooms are tastefully furnished, the kitchen is big and bright and the bathroom is new and functional. Even though the location is so central, it is a very quiet and pleasant area. We enjoyed walking around in the city and had some very good day trips on bikecycles outside the city where we passed mansions, houseboats and beautiful nature. We also enjoyed a trip on the channels in rented kayaks which was perfect way to see the city. The little terrasse behind the kitchen is a wonderful spot to relax with a book, a drink or a nap :-) Thanks again to Maria and Leo for this nice homeexchange and for all the good communication during our stay. We definitely recommend the Escher museum in Haag and the nice biking trails outside the city. And the Park around the Kröller-Müller Museum and the museum itself is a must go. Our favorite bakery is KEEK just down the street. ”
“The swap and contact with Maria and Leo were great ! Thanks to them ! The apartment is very nice and very well located in the center of Utrecht, near the canals and small cafés and shops. Very easy to discover the city. We loved this lovely town, full of charm ! By luck, we had a wonderful weather, and we made nice bike rides ! It was beautiful holidays, I recommand warmly this swap !”
“It was a lovely stay in this typical Dutch apartment, located in the historic center of Utrecht and overlooking the ancient canal. The connecting stairs between the two floors are a little steep but we have not had difficulty getting used to them. Very well equipped kitchen, large, bright and comfortable living room, pleasant terrace with views of the CaterijnConvent. Spotless bathroom, comfortable bedrooms. A few steps away from any type of shop, bar or restaurant. We felt very comfortable when at home, and in a strategic position to reach many places in Holland by train in 30-40 minutes. Absolutely recommended.”
“We spent 6 days in this home and were very pleased with this exchange (which was our very first exchange experience). The hosts are very friendly and were easy-going in the preparation of the exchange and always ready to help. They also offered flowers both for our arrival at their home and at their departure at ours. The house is very spacious and pleasant and the large windows provide a lot of natural light. The neighborhood is very quiet. The bikes available for use by the visitors are a big asset. Within minutes you are immersed in the nature and silence of the green polders with all sorts of birds around you, or you are cycling towards the charming town of Amersfoort on quiet paths nicely separated from the main automobile traffic. The bike ride to Spakenburg (a beautiful fishers’ village some 10 kilometers away) is really a must. As suggested by our hosts, we tried the “kibbeling” (a typical Dutch snack consisting of battered chunks of fried fish), tasty and really delicious ! Also, you can easily go to Amsterdam or to Utrecht for a one-day visit. All this we did without a car, as the train connections are good and efficient. All in all, a truly commendable exchange experience !”
“We spent a very enjoyable and unbelievably sunny weekend at the place of Maria, Leo and the kids. First of all I have to say Leo oriented us very well towards their place when we got a little bit lost in traffic around Amersfoort:-) The house of Maria and Leo is very spacious, it has a beautiful garden and everything you need to spend a relaxing holidays. It is located in a neighbourhood called 'Vathorst', just outside Amersfoort center, with good public transportation facilities. Amersfoort is a very nice typically charming Dutch city where you can stroll around the narrow streets, small channels and cosy bars and restaurants. It is very centrally located to visit other cities such as Utrecht and Amsterdam. When we got back home, our house was cleaned up perfectly so it was really a very successful home exchange for us. Maria and Leo, we wish you all the best and perhaps we can exchange again in the future!”
Where is it?
If you, like we, are tired of too many tourists but still want the buzz of history, canals and museums Utrecht is the right choice. Utrecht is a well kept city centre full of good restaurants and bars, culture and shopping opportunities. On the water there's a lot of activity, boats, canoes, sups and tourist sightseeing boats are passing by. Enjoy the view from the waterfront and act as a local drinking wine or having dinner while people are passing by on the water. We are literally in the heart of the centre and within walking distance of everything.
We are situated in what is known as the museum area with various important museums. Most houses, like ours are protected cultural heritage. You won't need a car, in fact it's in your way as there's no parking spot and parking is pricy. If you travel by car check the affordable options to park long term (more than a day tichet) at P&R Utrecht locations.
In the city we mostly walk or use a bike which is much faster.

Easy acccess to connection to Schiphol Airport (30 minutes by train). The residential city of The Hague 40 minutes by train, Rotterdam the same. Amsterdam you will reach in 25 minutes . The train station Utrecht CS is the biggest in the Netherlands with connections to all corners of the country. You walk there in 10-15 minutes.
Closeby you will find a shopping area with supermarkets as well. On Saturday you walk to the food market for fresh produce.
