“Matthijs and Marlou were perfect exchange partners for my first experience to swap homes with complete strangers (!). Well, not exactly, as we had been corresponding beforehand and we got to know each other pretty well. Upon our arrival at their house, my friend and I were greeted by their friend who warmly welcomed us to the house and to the Netherlands after a long journey from New York. Not only was the house in impeccable state but there were goodies waiting for us to feast on: a bottle of wine, chocolates, nuts, fruit, etc. There were also a pile of guide books and maps, which came handy during our stay. We soon discovered what a cool place Den Haag was with all the art scene (girl with the pearl earrings), magnificent architecture and restaurants near the house and in the city center. What is more, there is a beautiful sea with white sandy beach that stretches for miles within a walking distance! Coming from the heat and crowd of people in New York, it was an oasis for us! Den Haag, unlike some other cities, is also bike friendly, so if you are into cycling, look no further. My friend enjoyed her evening cycling after our day of sightseeing. Den Haag is also a symbolic place of "peace"--something we desperately need in this day and age! Going to the Peace Palace was a wonderful experience and had our moment of contemplation on how peace can be achieved even if it meant through small gestures. Lastly but not in any way the least, they have such a cool house! Marlou works in the interior designing industry, and it shows! What a wonderful job she has done to the house. The living room makes you think you are definitely living in a postmodern world, the wall to the den is full of movie posters that marked our age and Matthijs\'s music room makes you think you can have a go at a recording session! Not only is the house a cultural hub, but it is also surrounded by plants and nature (like their garden!). What is there not to like? Convinced? Good! Thanks to Matthijs and Marlou, we had a wonderful time in cool Den Haag!”
Matthijs's reviewsAs a host (7)
“We would highly recommend doing a house exchange with Matthijs and Marlou. They were the best possible hosts! During our 3 1/2 week stay we were in constant communication. They had lots of great suggestions on what to do and were always quick to answer any questions we had. When we arrrived, Matthij\'s son was there to greet us and show us around the house. On their dining room table there was a welcome gift, a bottle of wine, snacks and a beautiful flower arrangement. They also left lots of maps, brochures and recommendations on restaurants, museums etc. saving us a trip to the Tourist Information office. The house and decor was stunning, like something out of a magazine, which it actually was ! There is also a lovely outdoor courtyard where we enjoyed most of our meals. We were able to use their good quality bikes to explore the city, the beach and the surrounding cities like Delft, Gouda and Leiden. After a long day cycling and exploring we appreciated their massive soaker tub or big walk in shower. Their home is centrally located. We were able to bike or take the tram to downtown in 10 minutes. Their neighbourhood is a charming area with grocery stores, cafes and restaurants close by. Den Hague is beautiful city. You won\'t find lots of canals there but you will find the highest number of parks of any city in the Netherlands making it a lush, leafy city. There are many interesting, historic neighbourhoods which are best explored by bike. We had a wonderful time in Den Hague thanks to our lovely hosts and their beautiful home!”
“Our first exchange experience was a total success due to the home and hospitality of Matthijs & Marlou. From our first contact, I realized our luck in partnering with these honest, flexible, creative and gracious people. Marlou is an interior designer of great talent. The house is beautifully, but practically, decorated and makes a comfortable and relaxing place to nest, cook, or venture out. Matthijs left a book full of information, maps and details on our particular interests. Immediately, we realized that we were perfectly located to enjoy the very best of this sophisticated and multi-faceted city. Between two delightful neighborhood centers and close to both a truly beautiful beach and a town center of royal buildings, a variety of art galleries and shopping galore. All were reached, enjoyed and explored on the wonderful bikes they left for our use. Delft - a treasure of ancient Holland - is a perfect day trip on bikes and Amsterdam center a short train ride away. No one could ask for a more perfectly located and appointed home away from home. Don't hesitate to exchange with this lovely combination of hosts and home.”
“It was our first exchange and we were very impressed about the smoothly sequence. We were lucky to encounter a very friendly and obliging couple. When we arrived we were picked up and we had a contact person to help us with questions and problems. The house was best prepared, also for our 1 and a half year old son. We felt at home from the first day. Our hosts also left us a detailed guide for sights and other useful things responding to our ideas. The house is situated in a nice area of the city, well connected to the center. Inside you'll find a lovingly arranged apartment equipped with everything you need. Our little son we were very happy to have a small and quiet garden for playing, while we enjoyed our coffee there. Den Haag is a city with much to see and many homely places. The connection to other cities by public transport is very good. You have to see Amsterdam, Rotterdam and all the lovely small towns Holland has to offer. We made a trip to Belgium too, also easy to reach and not far away.”
“We had a really nice and quiet weekend with our children in the The Hague house of Milou and Matthijs. Even though Milou and Matthijs did not go to our home, they were so kind as to lend us their home while on holiday. After being received hospitably with a nice bottle of wine and a treat we felt right at home in their beautiful house. The house was equipped with all the things we could wish for, while being very stylish at the same time. The Hague was a really nice city to for us for the weekend. We would like to recommend this house to everyone wanting to visit The Hague. We hebben het echt naar onze zin gehad in jullie huis, het paste als een jas!”
“Matthijs and Marlou left a welcome package of wine, cheese and snacks to greet us on our arrival along with maps and detailed recommendations on Den Haag and other cities. Their home is lovely and comfortable - a city home with an exclusive garden terrace. The tram quickly takes you to downtown/centrum or you can walk there in 35 minutes - it is a very pleasant walk. Great cultural venues/events and shopping. There is convenient and frequent train service to other cities in Holland - Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Utrecht, Leiden, etc. We used their bicycles to go to the beach almost daily - Kijkduin and Scheveningen. Highly recommended.”
“Matthijs was a great exchange host for our Netherlands visit. His home is well located on two major Metro lines to the city center and train stations. The email communication before and during the trip made everything so easy. His son met me to provide an orientation to the home and city. Wine, nibbles and tour books were waiting on the table. Visiting Delft, Scheveningen (beaches), Rotterdam, Leiden, Haarlem, Amsterdam by train or metro was fast, less than an hour, and very easy. Coming home to comfortable living room, dining room, TV room and garden for a quiet refreshment from day of sight seeing was wonderful. Great small grocery, other markets, and restaurants within 2 blocks was perfect. The Hague is a charming city with so much to see that many days were spent locally. If the Netherlands is of interest, contact Matthijs.”
Where is it?
The city of The Hague is more than 750 years old. It houses the government, the Dutch royal family, all the international embassies, many museums with international art collections, a very long and beautiful beach with many restaurants along the boulevard and a fishing harbour. The Hague has a beautiful historic centre with many (good) restaurants and shops.
The Hague is an international city (with 21 international schools), the 4th UN-city in the world and well-known as 'the City of Peace and Justice' with the famous Peace Palace, the International Criminal Court, The International Tribunal for Yugoslavia and many other international institutions.
