Where is it?

Neighbourhood

Location Eegracht 70, 8651 EH IJlst, The Netherlands

IJlst is one of the Eleven Cities in the province of Fryslân. The city-rights originate from the 13th century, but IJlst is really more like a town, with its 3500 inhabitants.
The 19th century house, originally a city farm, is situated in the old centre of IJlst.
Extra wide front- and side-doors remember the time when the cows had to go through them to get to the meadows surrounding IJlst by boat!
The guesthouse in the garden is built at the place where the haystack used to be.

In front of the house is a so called over-garden, next to the Eegracht. In former times housewives used this little plot to bleach their laundry.
At the sides a small alley separates the house from the neighbours.

At the back a narrow (6 m) but long (45 m) garden ends with a spectacular view at the horizon over the Ruterpolder. This polder is an area below sea-level which used to be a lake, now surrounded by dikes and pumped dry. Frisian red-and-white cattle - a very old race - horses and sheep graze in the meadows. Water- and field-birds can be seen directly from the garden.

IJlst lies in the centre of the Frisian Lake District. Several open waterways connect IJlst with other interesting cities, towns, villages, lakes, small woods and rural areas. The little motorboat in the boathouse in the backyard can bring you there.

The flat surroundings give good opportunities for cycling. Interesting cycling paths are everywhere. There are 2 bicycles for you to use.

Sneek (34.00 inhabitants) – 5 km from the quiet IJlst – is the city where everything happens:
theatre, concerts, cinema, exhibitions, galleries, museums, shopping, restaurants, cafés, disco’s, swimmingpools, sport events, sailing competitions.....

Amsterdam, our capital, is only an 90 minutes drive (125 km) by car via the Afsluitdijk. This dike is 32 km long and divides the waters of Waddenzee and IJsselmeer.

The distance from our house to the railway station of IJlst is 1 km. The elaborate Dutch railwaynet gives many opportunities to discover more of the province of Fryslân and the rest of the Netherlands.
