About our home

De 'Zeevaart' is a 250 year old warehouse. First it was a granary, the last century it functioned as wood storage. Fifteen years ago the huge industrial building was totally rebuild as a house. Last years the first two floors were refurbished. The house has four levels with lots of old details and has the feeling of a luxury loft. The ground floor has a garden room and an office. On the second floor is the parents bedroom, a bathroom and an entresol with library. The third floor is a large loft-like living room, with open kitchen and open living room with woodburner. On the fourth floor is the library with lots of books and dvd's, two large children's bed rooms and a bath room with bath and shower. If necessary, we have all things necessary for a baby available. We can also provide extra beds for adults. On the roof we have what we call our own folly, a watchtower which functioned in the old days as a grain elevator. In front of the house is an enwalled courtyard with huge garden and own parking place. You can see a video impression of the house here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DgCheDUFbA8

More about us

  1. We are Annelies and Adwin and we have a son Teun (16) and a daughter Pieke (14). We also have a cat called Moes (Frisian for Mouse), she's a mix of Maine Coon and Nowegian Forest cat. Moes is very low in maintenance. During the day she lives outside. Annelies is a team manager for the forestry commission, Adwin is a writer and historian. We are both experienced travellers (Adwin was a travel writer for ten years). We have done fifteen exchanges before and it is an ideal way to get to know a country. We'd prefer a destination on a rural setting, if possible near the sea or a lake. But you may always surprise us with something else. The period for the home exchange is limited to school holidays. For short school holidays we also like to exchange in The Netherlands. We're looking for a two/three week exchange in summer 2021 (10th july - 22nd august) and perhaps a one/two week exchange in october 2021 and december 2021.

Where is it?

Our house is located on a quiet spot in the historical heart of Leeuwarden, the European Capital of Culture 2018. Restaurants, pubs, shops, musea, theatres and cinema's are within walking distance. The charming city of Leeuwarden is the capital of Friesland, a province with its own language and culture. The city is surrounded by green meadows, lakes and wetlands. People who like cycling, walking or watersports (sailing, canooing) will have a great time. There is also a very nice zoo nearby. The province of Friesland is famous for its rich history, picturesque lakes and immaculate villages. The small historical cities have all their own charm. Fun to watch are traditional Frisian sports as skútsjesilen (races with traditional sailing ships) and fierljeppen (pole vault jumping over the water). North of Leeuwarden (30 minutes drive to one of the ferries) are the Frisian islands, famous for their wilderness, dunes and kilometres of empty beaches. Amsterdam is about an hour and 15 minutes away by car. More info about our area at: www.visitfryslan.nl

Friesland was elected by Lonely Planet as the number 3 European top destination of 2018 https://youtu.be/x_1cQsOz47U.
