Mareike's reviewsAs a host (2)
“My first home exchange to Mareike en Nis' home in Maastricht was excellent! We felt right at home on their comfy couch, and what a beautiful garden. Just a 10 minute walk to the Vrijthof square in the city centre, makes this home a great place to start exploring Maastricht. The city of Maastricht offers an interesting mix of culture and history (Fort St.Pieter and the city's fortification for example), dining out, terraces and shopping. The province of Limburg provides something for everyone, from being outdoors on the hilly countryside, to historic towns like Valkenburg, to the Tripoint at Vaals. From Maastricht you can easily explore the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany!”
Where is it?
Maastricht is the oldest town in the Netherlands. It has a beautifull historic center with Roman remnants and also a very nice citycenter with high grade shops. It is situated in the most southern part of the country. It is nicknamed the first French city on the route from Scandinavia to the Côte d' Azur because of its burgundian atmosphere. Nowhere in the Netherlands is such a high concentration of restaurants with one or two Michelin stars. Also the city from the fameus André Rieu .
Because the Netherlands are situated in a 3-river delta, it is mostly flat land, our region, however, is hilly. It can be compared to Tuscany, only our hills are more steep instead of sloping. It is therefor ideal for extended walks. Our national pride is situated only 20 km. from Maastricht. It is a mountain of 140 mtrs. high. On this 'mountain' also is the spot where the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany meet. So you can stand in 2 countries at the same time (and spit on the third at your liking). The house is an ideal starting point for hiking and biking, but also for visiting cities abroad, such as Brussels, Antwerp, Düsseldorf, Cologne which can be reached by car in about 1 hour. Liege (Belgium) with its beautiful trainstation, designed by the worldfamous (and notorious for the exorbitant cost of maintenance of his buildings) architect Calatrava, is only 20 min. from Maastricht. There also go trains. Amsterdam by train is 2,5 hours. Central Paris in about 3 hours. But there also is a wonderfull zoo in the vicinity.
