About my place
The apartment is located on the waterfront of Coolhaven in the Delfshaven District of Rotterdam.
Just across the building De Machinist can be found, a nice laid back restaurant retrieved from an old nautical school and now one of the most well known restaurants of the city. Over the summer you might like to enjoy a fish meal in the open terrace of the Viskantine just downstairs from the apartment.
Walking distance you can find the Euromast, Het Park and Museum Park. The Kunsthal (Museum of modern art of Rotterdam) is located there along with the museum Boijmans Van Beuningen and its recently built Depot. The historical Delfshaven is also next door with its typical Dutch architecture and lively cafés. Here you can sit and enjoy a nice beer at De Pilgrim, one of the oldest breweries of Rotterdam with the view on the Distilleerketel, the one and only windmill left of the city. On a misty day you might like to go for a walk or a bike ride to the Erasmus Bridge. Like the Euromast, this bridge is part of Rotterdam skyline and connects the center of the city with the southern neighbourhoods of Katendrecht, Afrikaansebuurt and Kop van Zuid. This area used to be the point of departure of many ships towards the new world and hosts the photography museum of Rotterdam (Nederlands Fotomuseum), as well as theaters (Lantaren Vester and Lux) and many restaurants, Hotel New York and Phoenix Food Factory to cite a few. The busy Nieuwe Binnenweg also offers quite a nice walk through the West Rotterdam and up to the central Eendrachtsplein.
As with most places in the Netherlands, the city is relatively easy to walk or bike through. Bikes can be easily rented at the Centraal station. Alternatively, the following public transport options can be considered:
- 3 minutes to Station Coolhaven (Lines A, B, C)
- 5 minutes to stop Hemraadsplein (Line 4)
- 5 minutes to stop Pieter de Hoochweg (Line 8)
The apartment 60 square meters, which I share with a Lithuanian Architecture student over the winter months. It is located in a Dutch building from the '50's. It does not have an elevator, but it does have a storage for bikes.
2 Supermarkets are at walking distance on the Nieuwe Binnenweg and next to the Sint Jobshaven.
Living room and kitchen face the north on the water side, whereas the bedroom is exposed to south and is the warmest room of the house. Both sides are quite nicely illuminated: from the northern side you can enjoy a nice view of the Coolhaven in the morning, whereas the bedroom is exposed to the southern side and collects quite some light during the afternoon. The bedroom also has access to a balcony on the back side of the building. This can be quite a nice spot to read or simply relax during sunny days and is also home to my outdoor plants.
The living and dining area are very spacious with a dining table, which can easily fit up to four people. A nice sound system is also available with speakers connected to a Bluetooth station and even a record player. The house is filled with plants. It might be arranged whether you like to take care of them or not, depending on your inclinations :)
The kitchen is equipped with fridge, kettle, espresso machine (moka), a small oven and kitchen utensils distributed over several cabinets. The toilet is located next to the entrance door, whereas further down the aisle there is a bathroom with a shower, a basin and a washing machine.
The bedroom is provided with a double French bed with reading lights, built-in closets and cabinets. Bed linen and towels can be found in there.
This is a non-smoking apartment. Smoking is possible on the balcony.
