About our home

Alpenblick is a solidly built Swiss-style chalet in Castle Hill Village in the New Zealand Alps. With skiing, mountain biking, rock climbing, watersports and walking trails on your doorstep, plus tennis courts and a water slide in the village you are spoiled for outdoor activities all year round.
The house itself has a fully equipped kitchen, washing machine, tumble dryer and fridge freezer. There are 3 bedrooms, one with 4 bunks, a 2 bunk room and a double with queen sized bed. There is also an overflow double bed in the lounge and a couple of trundle beds if visitors alight on you at the last minute! There are heaters in every room and a log burner in the spacious lounge. The house is ideal for children with many jigsaw puzzles, games, lego, cards and large DVD selection and has table tennis, darts and table football in the downstairs room/garage. There is also badminton, boules and a slack line to set up if you wish.
Castle Hill is a few minutes drive from the beautiful Castle Hill Rocks, and from Cave stream for those of you seeking an underground adventure.
It is a 40 minute drive to Arthur's Pass village with many high alpine trails. There are many awesome single track mountain bike trails on your doorstep, check out http://www.castlehill.net.nz/castlehill/mtb/castlehill_mtb.php for more details.
In the winter there are 5 ski fields to choose from. The commercial field of Porter Heights is the closest just a 10 minute drive away. There are 4 club fields (smaller and locally run) ranging from 10 - 40 mins away, Cheeseman, Broken River, Craigieburn and Temple Basin.

More about us

  1. My husband Ton and I live in Christchurch and have 2 teenage girls, a dog and a cat.

  2. Ton is an environmental scientist and I’m a vet.

  3. We all love the outdoors, that’s why we bought our Bach at Castle Hill. It’s so close (1hr 15min drive) and there’s so much to do there. Most of all it’s a peaceful break from city life.

Neighbourhood

Castle Hill is a 1 hour 10 minute drive from Christchurch. It’s a fantastic base to explore the craigueburn forest park and Arthur’s pass national park. There is an awesome system of single track mountain bike trails from your doorstep, plus beautiful walks through native beech forest and up onto the tops for the more adventurous.
Nearby there are several lakes for swimming and fishing (you need to get a license for this). If you would like kayaks or a paddle board we can loan these to you.
In the village itself there are tennis courts and a waterslide. At the bach we have tennis racquets and balls plus table tennis, badminton, table football, slack line and boules.

In the winter there is skiing at several fields, the closest being Porters and Cheeseman at 10 mins drive away, then there’s Broken River and Craigieburn 20 and 30 minutes away.

Buzzy restaurants
Castle Hill village has no shops or cafes, it is truly a place to get away from it all. 5 minutes down the road there is Porters Lodge which is open most of the year round offering accomodation and lunch and dinner. 20 mins away in Springfield the Yelliw Shack offers great coffee plus a licenced restaurant, and in the other direction there are several places to eat and drink in Arthur’s Pass Village.
Spot of exercise
Skiing, tramping, mountaineering, mountain biking, swimming/sailing, rock climbing, even a spot of caving, all on your doorstep.
Day tripping
It’s a 40 minute drive to Arthur’s Pass village in the heat of the southern Alpes. Carry on another 40 mins and you will reach the beautiful west coast of NewZealand with its wild beaches and rugged forest and mountains.
