About our home

The beach house (known in New Zealand as a bach) is brilliant for families; children can play and adults can relax. The north-facing deck overlooks a lawn at the end of a cul-de-sac.
It is an 8-minute stroll to the beach, and a 4-minute wander to the playground, ice cream shop & The Pour House craft brewery and restaurant.
The house is a 1980s Lockwood 2-bedroom design, with separate rumpus room. An outdoor shower is available to clean off pesky sand.
There is full cellphone coverage, but no TV or internet connection; sharpen your board game skills instead with chess, Trivial Pursuit, Pictionary, Scrabble or Monopoly.
Enjoy a mini-library of books, magazines, trivia tomes, cards, toys (including a bag ready for the beach), a wooden train set, cricket set, petanque set and trampoline. A port-a-cot and highchair are also available for young children.
Fancy a barbecue for dinner on the deck? Lounge back with a tipple as the sun dips over the hill. Bose speakers are available for you to plug in your playlist. Help yourself to the herb garden to garnish your cuisine or sample the fruits of the mandarin, lemon, lime and feijoa trees. After dinner, consider staging your own version of Pot Black on the 8x4ft pool table.

------

Our main home is a farm cottage in the countryside near Auckland with water views of the Manukau Harbour. We have lived here for 16 years. The two nearest houses are more than 200m away (one belonging to Andrew's father).
The house is another Lockwood design with a main kitchen/dining/lounge area with fireplace, 3 bedrooms with 2 queen size beds and a baby's room with cot, change table and toys, and a bathroom with separate toilet and shower and a large deck.
We are 30-minutes (off-peak) to Auckland city centre. There are chickens and cattle on the farm (25 acres) and a tennis court and kayak are available. Pukekohe golf course is in close proximity (a set of clubs can be borrowed).

Features

More about us

  1. We are a married couple, aged 40 and 39. Andrew is a sports journalist and Lynley is a full-time mother to three-year-old Jack.

The Hahei beach house can be available at most times, and our main house in Karaka (near Auckland) would be available for a few days if needed, given its proximity to the airport.

We would consider a non-simultaneous exchange.

We have enjoyed splendid exchanges to Paris (2015) and Vancouver (2010) where we worked at the Winter Olympics.
