Our house is a warm and comfortable bungalow, built in the 1940s, with modern decor and facilities. There is a very homely atmosphere, with timber floors and soft colours. The heart of the house is the kitchen, with all the main spaces flowing from there - a dining room, a family area, separate lounge, and a study/office. The hallway also flows off from the kitchen, with the laundry, three bedrooms and bathrooms.
Many people comment on the welcoming and warm atmosphere of the house. We have owned it for about 20 years, and love living here.
We are Kate and Bernard - both in our fifties with an interest in travel and people. We both work in Wellington (Bern runs his own training-design business, and Kate is a counsellor).
With our kids now indendent we're ready to do more travelling. We have had a successful house exchange previously, with a family from France.
The house is on the edge of Lower Hutt city, which is about 20 minutes drive from the centre of Wellington, New Zealand's capital city. We look out on bush-clad hills. The street has many trees and a pleasant mixture of homes from quite simple to elegant and substantial.
A feature of our home is the cottage front garden, with a stream running through it. We wake up to a dawn chorus of native birds from the nearby hills. Birds such as tuis, bell-birds and kereru (native wood pigeons) are daily visitors.
The Hutt Valley is a quiet, neighbourhood-based city, with good shopping and local transport, and within easy access of the excellent cultural, entertainment and shopping facilities of Wellington. Our house is about 10 minutes drive from local beaches, and there are numerous bush-walks within walking distance.
