About our home

The north facing courtyard with its gardens are central to the house and flow seamlessly on 'the winterless north' days. Dine inside or out year round in our mild climate. When its cooler there's a wood fire in a cosy lounge. Built in 2017 it has modern specifications in classic style. The office, master bedroom, kitchen and living areas are wonderfully organised for two people and are wheelchair friendly. This is a retirement home - the guest wing is separated from the main living area by a long second lounge area/ hallway. This wing has two double bedrooms and bathroom; one bedroom also has a dining, kitchenette, deck and separate entrance as well as couch and television. We have a pool table, 8m salt water pool, spa and .56ha of private grounds leading down to the harbour with kayaks, sailboat, road bikes, and golfclubs on site. Mangawhai is home to two significant links golf courses, bowling club and NZ's largest skate bowl is 300m away. Within walking distance we also have an outdoor exercise area, surf beach, several restaurants, museum, art gallery, markets, tennis courts, a wonderful network of walks all maintained to a high standard for year round enjoyment. There are clubs and a great church. The community has a vibrant village atmosphere holding a sat markets. Within easy reach of Auckland. Head north or south there are beautiful white sandy beaches, head out to sea there are great diving, and fishing opportunities. Head inland and you find museums Kauri forests and the other side of New Zealand - we are at the 'skinniest' part of the country. We ideally seek to exchange homes or see our second listing of our guest wing for points.

Where is it?

Neighbourhood

Mangawhai Heads has both a surf beach and harbour. The local coastline is loaded with beaches of golden sand. Fishing is popular from the shore and boating equally so from here. The harbour is tidal and has a sand bottom - at low tide you can walk for miles from our property. An hour on a smooth run from Auckland and 45 mins from Whangarei with online groceries delivered to your door twice a day from Walkworth and local veges available along with local wine and farmers produce at the Sat markets will see you well supplied with food. Being a resort location there is an influx of second home owners flooding in during weekends and with that the locals benefit from a bunch of good restaurants and lots of coffee stops. Two vinyards here offer tastings. If you are invited to Tara Iti you are fortunate - however our local Mangawhai Golf club is a great links course.
The coastline is spectacular. Miles and miles of coves and walkways that hug the coast it is breathtaking.
The community is vibrant and people are friendly! Many people are semi-retired and an equa number have young families. There are no dangerous pests or animals in New Zealand which makes bush walking attractive to many.
Deep sea fishing charters, harbour cruises on both coasts are day trips from here: The mailrun to Kawau Island is handy as is the marine reserve at Goat Island. Matakana with its fabulous movie theatres is a good night out after a visit to a local winery.
Farming is New Zealands biggest export earner after tourism now and then wine. Farms surround the towns and cities and Mangawhai is no exception

Our local pub has good food and often has weekend artists during the afternoon as well as hosting concerts through the summer.

Take a drive to Whangarei City 45mins north, head out to Whangarei Heads and lunch at the pub on the water after walking Mt Manaia - or just drive and have lunch!

Its two hours to the Bay of Islands
Our temperature is sub-tropical - you'd be brave/mad to swim all year. We do have a winter even though we're termed the 'winterless north'. Winter is mild.
