About our home

Looking for a swap around Xmas in Melbourne, Australia, and probably Europe and UK in mid 2017. Possibly a long term rental in Melbourne through 2017.

Our large and welcoming home was built in 1910, but has been extensively renovated over many years. Located 25 minutes from the Auckland CBD and only 5 minutes drive from Auckland International Airport, it boasts a beautiful pastoral outlook and sea views. Backing directly onto a large regional park, you have access to lovely country walks, local archeological history and beautiful harbour views. There is an excellent wharf nearby to launch a boat and take yourself fishing in the vast Manukau Harbour.

Great outdoor living area and large garden for kicking a ball around, our home has been equipped for a growing family (we have five children who have all moved out now). There are plenty of bedrooms, currently three set up for sleeping (master bedroom has a super king bed, second bedroom has a queen and third bedroom has a king single) but we have additional beds and mattresses in the attic for more guests. The study easily converts back to a bedroom if you need it. There are two bathrooms, one with a full bath big enough for two. The home is tastefully decorated with beautiful kauri floorboards and new carpet in the living area. All the beds are very comfortable, and the living area has a large flat screen TV, plenty of couch space, a dining table large enough for 8, new kitchen with dishwasher, new oven and gas cooktop, fully operational laundry, high speed broadband and French doors opening out to the very large verandah, where there is more covered seating to enjoy the lovely summer days.

The neighbourhood is very quiet, and a haven for dog walkers, mountain and road bikers and runners. There is a small village which is surrounded by semi rural areas, some dairy farms, a winery (Award winning Villa Maria Estate) and some market gardens as well as the large regional park known as Otuataua Stonefields. South of the house toward the airport is a very interesting kauri fossil forest, buried thousands of years ago by the local volcano eruption. Remnants of the extinct volcanic mounds make up part of the fascinating landscape of the regional park.

We have two cars available for licensed drivers, should you wish to use them, with prior consultation. Currently there is no bus route in our street, but you can drive to the Onehunga railway station where the train will take you directly to the city.

My 84 year old father comes to stay on a regular basis so the house mostly operates on one level, with plenty of handrails around the entry points to assist those who need it.

We have a cat, Benny, and a white German Shepherd dog, Kaiser, who live with us, but there is a pet hotel close by which the dog can go to for short stays. Our street is in a very quiet, semi-rural village yet surprisingly close to town, and all amenities. It's not uncommon to see many native birds in our trees or on the farm park behind us.

Our location is right beside a large regional park rich in historical and geological features, beautiful views right across to the Coromandel Peninsula on a clear day, and out to the Tasman Sea. We are directly connected to the city via many cycle paths, and there are some lovely easy rides between here and the city, along with some beautiful walks and running routes.

Auckland is a city of volcanoes, and there is much evidence of ancient volcanic activity in the regional park. Within a short bike ride, or by car, you can reach many of the other large extinct volcanoes that circle the city. Auckland is an interesting and varied modern city, with a beautiful harbour and a pleasant climate. There are many fantastic day trips to be explored within a few hours' drive, from the beautiful Matakana region in the North with it's trendy farmers markets, restaurants and stunning beaches, to fabulous Piha Beach with its black sand and exhilarating surf. The popular tourist destination of Hobbition is around a two hour drive, with Rotorua and Lake Taupo reachable in under three hours. Our proximity to the airport means it is very easy to hop on a flight to Wellington, or Queenstown, and do some sightseeing.

We love our home, and would love to share it with you.

Neighbourhood

Buzzy restaurants
Nearby Onehunga has some excellent restaurants and bars, as does Royal Oak, a short drive across the Mangere Bridge.
Cool bars
Nightlife in abundance can be enjoyed at the Viaduct Harbour, Ponsonby and the fabulous Wynyard Quarter at the bottom of town.
Cozy cafés
Nearby Mangere Bridge has some great Cafes near the waterfront, an excellent fish and chip shop and a great weekend market. Also nearby is the local strawberry farm which serves delicious ice cream made on the premises from fresh strawberries, from October until April.
Retail therapy
Onehunga Dressmart, full of great factory outlets.
Bit of culture
Try the Villa Maria Estate for some wine tasting, a trip on the ferry to Waiheke island with it's many wineries and sculpture trails, or the excellent Auckland art galleries and theatres.
Walks in the park
With the regional park on your doorstep, you will never run out of new walks to do. You can walk or ride pretty much anywhere via the easily accessible bike trails.
Spot of exercise
Great running and biking around the waterfront. There is a very comfortable track from the house to Penrose and back, probably 25 km.
Day tripping
Take your pick. You can get to most of the centres in a few hours. Tauranga and the Karangahape Gorge are two of my favourites, but there is also Hobbiton, Waiwera, Piha, Coromandel Peninsula, Matakana and even the Bay of Islands
