About our home

We live on a quiet street, 5 minutes walk from an excellent surfing beach. The town centre is 15 minutes walk away along the coastal walkway. Our home was originally a typical NZ weatherboard house, but has been brought up to date including a new kitchen and bathroom, and folding doors to totally open it on to a sunny deck. There are three double bedrooms and a study with computer and fast Internet access. The kitchen is modern with a double drawer dishwasher, microwave etc and a separate laundry. Outside there is a gas barbecue. There are two lounge rooms, one with windows on three sides to get all day sun. The other is cosier, with a gas fire and TV, DVD, stereo etc. We have a pretty garden with lawn front and back. The garden slopes down to the Te Henui stream which meets the sea a short way away. You can see the sea and the mountain from the house. A station wagon is also available for exchange.

More about us

  1. We are in our late 50s. We both taught at the local polytechnic but finished working there at the end of 2005. We love to travel but when we are home Richard spends time working on his boat or surfing. Sally likes to keep fit by walking or going to the gym and also plays sax in a big band. We are non-smokers. We have had two successful swaps and are keen for more. We would be interested in short term exchanges within NZ or longer trips overseas.

Where is it?

New Plymouth is a town of around 60,000. It was named the world's most liveable city in the 20,001 - 75,000 population category, of the 2008 International Awards for Liveable Communities. It is on the coast with several good beaches. A short distance inland is Mt Taranaki, a beautiful cone shaped mountain, over 2,500m high. There are many lovely walks on the mountain and there is a ski field open sometimes in the Winter. The area is famous for its gardens and parks. Pukekura Park has an outdoor theatre which hosts concerts in the Summer months, often with well-known performers such as Elton John, Kiri te Kanawa and Mark Knopfler. WOMAD is held here annually in March. The town has many excellent restaurants and cafes, as well as an art gallery, modern museum and library. It is also a bustling port for container ships and smaller sailing and fishing boats. You can take a trip round the Sugar Loaf islands in a converted lifeboat. New Plymouth has a good climate with lots of sunshine. Though there is snow on the mountain it is rare to have a frost in the Winter on the coast.
