“If you are thinking of coming to The South Island of N.Z. We can recommend a fabulous home exchange with Karen and Kelvin our hosts at Parakaunui. They have a wonderful home with views to die for, from a terrace leading off from the lounge and dining room and a fabulous balcony from the main bedroom which overlooks the creek and ocean beyond. Situated near to Port Charmers and Dunedin it is an ideal location for visiting wonderful beaches, the city of Dunedin, the world renounced Albetross Sanctuary, blue penguins and hosts of other wonderful areas to explore. Their home is very comfortable providing all the facilities you will need, plus we were offered the use of a car while we were there which was a fantastic bonus to us. They are incredible hosts, they will ensure your stay will be a memorable one. Our exchange here was absolutely fabulous and we recommend that if you are looking for accommodation in this locality to do contact them. Alison & Mark.”
Karen's reviewsAs a host (3)
“We stayed a week in this beautiful house, high above Dunedin. The house was excellent and luxurious, the view incredible. But we enjoyed even more the company of Karen and Kelvin the owners of the house who stayed in a house closer to the bay. If you go to New Zealand you have to visit Dunedin, the Albatrosses and the marvelous golf courses. And if possible do a Swap with Karen and Kelvin!”
“I just spent a lovely almost-three-weeks, at Karen and Kelvin Marks's in Purakaunui, near Dunedin, New Zealand. I was looking forward to this exchange ever since I received their offer, a year ago. From the photographs, the house appeared to be one of my ideals: a beautiful modern house, in a vast, green, natural setting on the water. The nearness of the rivers, the bays, the ocean, gave beautiful views during the day and spectacular sunsets. The house was extraordinarily comfortable, and the host and hostess equally hospitable. They left us beautifully home-prepared gourmet food, enough for days! The house felt as if in its own world surrounded by mountains and sea. However Dunedin was close by, with its international flavor, and local sightseeing in nature was very fascinating. I recommend this exchange highly to anyone who wishes to experience nature in comfort and luxury.”
Where is it?
Purakaunui is a small, picturesque settlement 25 minutes from Dunedin. Dunedin is a university city of 150,000 with a strong Scottish heritage and founded on gold. We are a 15 minute drive from Port Chalmers where there is a supermarket, shops and restaurants. Ten minutes in the other direction is the Orokonui Ecosanctuary with native flora and fauna - right down to our iconic kiwi! On the peninsula opposite is the albatross colony (where the only Royal Albatross in the world nest on a mainland), also seals, penguins, sealions and birdlife in abundance. Beautiful, almost deserted beaches are all around us and Murdering Beach is famous for its surfing. Dunedin boasts five first-class 18 hole golf courses which, by world standards, have extremely modest green fees. Central Otago with its mountains, lakes, skiing (in winter), wineries and orchards is a 3 - 4 hour drive away. A vintage rail trip is popular and the Central Otago Rail Trail is a must for bikers and walkers alike. New Zealand abounds in breath-taking scenery and we like to think that most of it is right at our doorstep.
