About our home

Available from April to December each year for a non simultaneous exchange basis.~~ Situated in the fabulous Bay of Islands, New Zealand and just a 3 hour drive or a 40 minute plane ride north of Auckland. Atu Whenua is just 2 km from the centre of Paihia, one of the top holiday destinations in the North Island. In a quiet location surrounded by native bush but just two minutes from unspoilt sandy beaches. 3 bedrooms, sleeps 6. Greatly extended and upgraded in 2008/9 and 2014. The ensuite bedroom with glass on 3 sides is surrounded by native bush and has the feeling of sleeping in the forest (without the mosquitos). Above is a large deck area to take advantage of the wonderful bush views seen in the photographs and a large living and dining space with a newly fitted kitchen. Facing north, the house stays cool in the summer and has very efficient heat exchangers for the cooler winter months. Air conditioning is available but rarely if ever needed. A 4wd car can also be available for a swap.

More about us

  1. Richard and Valerie, UK residents now retired to a leafy piece of the Kent Weald in southern England for the English summer, we are New Zealand residents from December to April each year. We have four grown up independent children all now established in their separate careers and families, our daughter and family being resident in Troy, Michigan. Our holiday home in Paihia, is where we spend the English winters and would love to visit other parts of the world in spring and autumn. We are also interested in visiting other parts of New Zealand, January to March, when time permits, and the UK, May to November. Interests are art, theatre, walking, swimming, golf, skiing, cycling, travelling, sailing (RYA Certificate), new friends and LIFE. Non simultaneous swaps are preferred as they offer more flexibility. You are welcome to use the house whenever it is available and we hope to visit your home in the fullness of time. For 2016 we would welcome offers to a second home in North America within striking distance of Michigan (August/September). Please get in touch and see if we can sort something out.

Where is it?

Our house is in Paihia in the Bay-of-Islands and Historic Russell is a short ferry ride across the bay. 20 minutes away is Kerikeri with a wider range of shops and Whangarei (pop 90,000) is a 50 min drive south. Watch the Dolphins, cruise the bay, go on fishing trips with the locals, join the mail boat as it delivers to the inhabitants of some of the 144 islands in the bay. Visit the Treaty House where the treaty between the British and Maori was signed or play golf at the spectacular cliff top course at Waitangi (visitors are made very welcome - 10 minute drive away and reasonable green fees). Further afield but within a days drive there is Cape Reinga, the northern tip of New Zealand, where the Pacific ocean meets the Tasman Sea. Yes you can actually see the join! Take a tour along the famous 90 mile beach and visit deserted beaches in locations near and far-there is so much to do here! or maybe just sit on the deck and watch the forest birds there is often an evening display by the Morepork as he feeds on the insects on the deck. This is the native New Zealand owl and is not often seen in the wild.
