About our home

Our home is located at Paraparaumu Beach (8,500 population) on the lovely Kapiti Coast, 50 kms from New Zealand’s capital city Wellington. A good variety of shops and many cafes and galleries are found along the beach front. Paraparaumu township is 3 kms away and has supermarkets, all main shopping outlets and a mall. Wellington city is easily accessed by road (45 minutes) or by a very regular daily train service (55 minutes).

The house has a large open plan living area of new kitchen, dining area and lounge opening onto a balcony which provides ever-changing views of the sea and Kapiti Island. The main bedroom is large and bright with a king sized bed, en-suite, seating area and opens onto a spacious deck. The second bedroom has a double bed and is light and airy. A large bathroom has another toilet, shower and full sized bath. The sun room/conservatory, which also opens onto the decking and outside seating area, is a warm sunny spot with a long wicker couch which can be used for sleeping if required.

The house is well insulated with double glazed windows, heat pumps and a cosy log fire in the living area. The double garage beneath the living areas has internal access.

Where is it?

Our street borders a large and very popular golf course. A four minute walk along the street in the other direction leads to an access path to the beach. The long grey sandy beach with drift wood and dunes is great for walking along in all weathers and it commands spectacular sunsets. The sea is good for swimming and used year round for fishing and kayaking. Directly across the 5km of sea is Kapiti Island which is a Department of Conservation nature reserve covered in native bush and home to many NZ native birds. Regular tourist trips are taken to the island.

Up and down the Kapiti Coast are other small settlements to explore, each with beaches and cafes. The road further north leads to all major North Island towns. A day or weekend trip over the Rimutaka hill from Wellington takes you to the Wairarapa and the wine-growing region of Martinborough.

Wellington is the capital of New Zealand, a beautiful small city sitting on a natural harbour and surrounded by bush clad hills. The "coolest little capital in the world" (Lonely Planet). Compact and easily walkable, it is filled with good shopping, restaurants, and coffee places. "Among the best eight cities in the world for good coffee" (CNN 2014). The waterfront is a great spot to visit and is always buzzing at weekends with markets, cafes and often outdoor concerts and other activities.

The capital city has a reputation as a vibrant cultural centre with a wide range of music, theatre, opera and dance as well as regular film festivals. In Te Papa National Museum, central downtown, you can spend hours exploring the history, geography, arts and architecture of New Zealand. Wellington has also become internationally well known as the home of the production studios for the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit movies.

In the centre of New Zealand, Wellington is a good position to base oneself as a jumping off spot for further North Island travel or venturing down to the South Island. There are ferries to the South Island daily from Wellington, Wellington airport (58 km from our home) has regular flights to all other city and many towns in the country. Paraparaumu also has a small airport with internal flights to Auckland, Nelson and Blenheim on a daily basis.
