About our home

** Looking for a house swap in London for 4-6 weeks Sept/Oct/Nov 2017. Some flexibility around dates. Also South Spain/France/Italy/Greece in Dec 2-17/Jan 2018.

Located in the leafy suburb of St Albans our modest home is in a beautiful tree lined street and quiet neighbourhood. It is a 5 minute drive into the very heart of the city, and the bus stop a half block away. Our home is well cared for and well heated with a wood burner and two heat-pumps. Kitchen and bathroom are recently renovated. The house has 3 bedrooms, 2 of them large doubles, and one being a small double. We have a big back garden area which is totally private and a great place to find a sunny spot and relax in.

Devastated by earthquakes 7 years ago, Christchurch is a crazy colourful city re-emerging from the ruins. Cranes dot the skyline, alongside blocked roads, empty demolished lots, seemingly abandoned buildings and shops and restaurants operating out of shipping containers. Christchurch is a city reinventing itself, full of vibrancy and often voted as one of the top destinations to visit in the world. It also is the gateway to the South Island with its incredible mountains, glaciers and wild scenery (think Lord Of The Rings).

In saying that, personally we are well over road cones and insurance companies and are looking to take our first decent holiday out of the city for 7 years! Hence looking at a house swap in London and/or southern Spain, southern France or Italy in the second half of 2017

We are Vanessa (47), Wade (47) and Riley (10), a responsible, reliable and happy family of three who enjoy a quiet life. We have a passion for slow travel and being together as a family of learners. We treat our home with love and respect and will treat yours as we do our own.

Where is it?

Buzzy restaurants
You just can't keep up with what is happening in the city at the moment. We went from a completely devastated city 7 years ago without a restaurant or cafe in site, to what is currently an explosion of eateries. Seriously good stuff.
Cool bars
Yes ... again lots of great bars have sprung up around the city.
Cozy cafés
Everywhere - there are cafes 2 minutes down the road, and in the city we still have them in shipping containers and temporary pop up facilities all over the show. My fav. is Origin just 2 minutes walk away
Retail therapy
I don't know if Christchurch is really anything special for retail therapy, especially if you are coming over from Europe. However, if you want woollen items you are in the right place
Bit of culture
Earthquake culture ... is that counted? Come and visit our devastated Cathedral still a monument to the destruction.
Walks in the park
This is a the garden city. It is a great place for walking around. Take in Hagley Park and and botanic gardens, or head out of town to get hiking in the bush
Spot of exercise
Walks in the park, Port Hills, on the beaches. We are known for being an outdoor nation, so you can probably find anything you are looking for.
Day tripping
Venture out of the town to Kaikoura for a spot of whale watching, inland to small town New Zealand, or into the mountains around Arthurs Pass or Hamner.
